Dark circles and sweatpants: BREASTFEEDING Barbie is here
A mum who custom makes ‘realistic’ Barbie dolls and sells them on her Etsy page has created a breastfeeding Barbie – and we think she’s never looked more beautiful.
Aussie Betty Strachan uses her awesome talent to redefine how females are represented by toy companies.
“Growing up, it always struck me as odd that there wasn’t as much diversity in the doll world as there could or should be,” she wrote on her Etsy page. Not every child is born with blonde hair and blue eyes. Some have freckles, some have gaps in their teeth.”
“When I became a mother, seeing the effect of the toys children are exposed to first hand, I noticed that the lack of diversity could be potentially damaging psychologically. A girl with brown skin and dark eyes may look at a light skinned doll and wonder why it’s classed as beautiful and she is not.”
The dolls she creates have dark circles under their eyes, gaps in their teeth and wide noses. And does it diminish their beauty? Not at all, because they’re real.
We are particularly taken with her breastfeeding Barbie – Betty has captured the tired, yet utterly content look of a new mum beautifully.
Now thanks to the publicity she has received for her creations, Betty has completely sold out, although she says she hopes to restock her online store soon.
What do you think mums? Would you like to buy your children dolls like these?
