A mum's letter to her twins: 'The most important thing I want you to know is how much I wanted you'

Juila McKean is mum to twin boys: Hudson and Elliot.

Julia has always wanted to have children, a wish she fulfilled last year when she gave birth to her sons.

However, the mum's journey wasn't easy, and she went down the sperm donor route in order to conceive.

The mum-of-two has now taken to her blog, TwinMamaJ, to write an open letter to her boys in a bid to explain why she decided to get a donor, and it's incredibly eye-opening.

"Dear Hudson and Elliot," she writes.

"You exist in this world because more than anything else in the world, I wanted you. I wanted to be your mum. I wanted to love you and raise you and for us to be a family.

"Families come in all different types. There are big families with mums, dads, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, grandparents.

"There are families where children have two mums or two dads, some have just a dad, or like our family, they have just a mum. It’s OK to be different, in fact, every family is different.

"They have different jokes, different toys, different ideas, different routines. Being different is great! It’s what makes us all unique!"

Continuing, she goes on to share her journey to motherhood.

"I always knew I wanted to be a mum. Lots of people meet someone special, get married and have children. This doesn’t happen for everyone though.

"You see, mummy has something called Lupus. And for many years I talked to doctors about you, or the idea of you. I wanted to know that no matter what, I would have a chance to be a mummy.

"Sometimes things can get in the way of that – things like being sick or different types of medicine. So, I decided to see if she could find someone to help her to become a mummy. Your mummy!"

Julia describes the donor as a "nice man" who likes lasagna and has a brother, explaining that the boys can meet him when they are older if they want.

Touching on how the boys might feel not having a dad, Julia says that it is OK to be sad, and she will always be there for them.

"The most important thing I want you to know is how much I wanted you," she writes.

"You are the BEST gift I have ever been given and I love you to the moon and back. You remember that EVERY family is different, and special, and every family does things differently.

"You should always be kind and open-minded. You should listen to everyone’s stories and be supportive, just as I hope others will support our story and our life.

"My darling boys. We are a family. I will ALWAYS love you, unconditionally. We are going to have the best time together!"

Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. What an incredible mummy.
