This Free Mayo Museum Could Save Your Easter Holidays

If you’re anything like me, Easter holidays fill you with equal parts excitement and dread. Two weeks of “I’m bored” complaints versus the joy of not doing the school run? The National Museum of Ireland at Turlough Park in Castlebar might just be your salvation this Easter break.

Forget frantically googling “free things to do with kids near me” at 9am on a Tuesday. This 30-acre historic estate has everything sorted: museum galleries, a Victorian Gothic house, landscaped gardens, a cycling path and that holy grail of parenting wins – a woodland playground.

The best bit? Admission is completely free. Yes, you read that correctly. No sneaky car park charges either.

Easter Workshops That Won’t Break the Bank

The museum will be running free Easter decoration workshops with artist Isolde Dingerkus on 31 March and 1 April. There are sessions at 10am, 11am and 12noon on both Wednesday and Thursday, lasting about 40 minutes each. Perfect timing if you’ve got littles who can’t sit still for longer.

You’ll need to book in advance at museum.ie though, because nothing good stays secret for long.

If you miss those, don’t panic. Museum Educator Fiona Deacy will be running sustainability-focused craft workshops on 8 and 9 April at 10.30am. Kids will gather materials during a guided garden walk before making seed paper and jewellery. It’s the kind of activity that ticks the “educational” box whilst actually being fun.

Indoor Adventures When the Weather Turns

Let’s be honest about Irish weather – you need a good indoor backup plan. The museum galleries are brilliant for this, with activity trails designed specifically for younger visitors. There’s even a dedicated children’s corner on Level C with colouring activities, jigsaws and books, plus gorgeous views of the gardens and lake.

The kids will love Beir Bua, an impressive Alaskan brown bear display that’s temporarily visiting from Dublin’s Natural History Collection. Standing on her hind legs with claws outstretched, she’s become quite the celebrity with visitors.

The Murmur of Bees exhibition is another winner. Kids can explore Ireland’s bee species and visit a glass viewing area to watch native Irish honeybees coming and going from rooftop hives. There are bee-themed colouring sheets available at reception too.

Outdoor Fun When the Sun Appears

For those rare moments when Irish weather cooperates, the Woodland Explorer nature trail is perfect for burning off energy. Pick up a free activity sheet at reception and let the kids loose on some nature-spotting challenges around the scenic grounds.

If you’re feeling ambitious, there’s a 10km Greenway cycling route connecting Turlough Park to Lough Lannagh in Castlebar. Full details are available at greenway.ie. The museum provides bicycle parking and picnic facilities if you want to make a proper day of it.

The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday to Monday from 1pm to 5pm throughout the Easter break. The only day they’re closed is Good Friday, 3 April.

Sometimes the best family days happen when you least expect them. Pack some snacks, charge the camera and prepare for the kind of day where everyone’s happy in the car on the way home. Those are the moments that make the chaos worth it.
