Big Kids

The reason this little boy is knocking on his neighbour's door is both heartbreaking and beautiful

This is amazing.

It is hard for mums and dads to be a working parent, especially when your job takes you to another country, away from your children.

Not only do we feel like we are missing out on their childhood, but they are missing out having both parents around them every single day – so it’s good to know that when we are not around, others will step up and guide our children until we can come home.

And that is exactly what Dean Craven, father-of-three, is doing for five-year-old Brian Kelly – acting as a father figure while Brian’s own dad, Dan, is deployed in Syria.

The duo have been friends since the Kellys moved in next door last summer, and when Dan had to go away, the friendship became even stronger.

In post uploaded to Twitter, Dean’s daughter Molly explains the situation, urging everyone to “appreciate the day”.

“This is our little neighbour. His dad is deployed in Syria and everyday he comes to the door asking to work with our dad. Appreciate today,” she wrote.

The neighbours play catch, golf and are often found “shooting the ball”.

“Brian knows that no one is going to replace his father,” Kelly tells ABC News.

“The bond between a father and son, it’s just unbreakable. If that was me, I would be happy that my child is smiling and has someone to look up to and be there for them until I get back.”

Wow, we're sure Dan will be delighted to hear that someone has been there for Brian while he is away.
