The 10 most important things a dad should teach his kids (including how to put clothes in the laundry basket)

As soon as I became a mum, I automatically started thinking about all the things I needed to teach my daughter. And it was a long list of things.

How to hold a fork, how to use a toilet and how to eat dinner without putting it on her head… yup, it was never-ending.

And I felt like it was all up to me to show her the way of the world.

But it's not just up to us mamas to do everything.

My SO also has a huge role to play in teaching our daughter what she needs to know… especially how to put clothes in the wash basket (because she just doesn't listen to me).

In fact, there are a few things that every dad should teach their little ones, and, no, not just how to top up the oil in the car – dads have a lot more to share than that!

These are the ten things every dad should teach his kids…

1. How to treat women with respect

Us parents are role models; our kids look up to us in order to figure out how to navigate their way in the world and it is important we are aware of this. So how you treat other women is exactly how they will treat women – so remember that at all times. Women are our mums, our sisters and our friends, so it is vital we treat each and everyone with the respect they deserve.

2. And equally… men with respect

It's not just about treating women with respect, men too deserve to be seen as equals, as people.

3. That treating yourself is good for the soul

Chocolate, clothes and nice holidays are not things to take for granted but neither are they things that should never be enjoyed.

4. How to put clothes in the laundry basket

Because we're damned if we're spending the next 20-odd years picking up after the kids.

5. To give 100 percent. At all times.

Even if it is just tidying your room (or putting the clothes in the laundry basket), half measures won't get us anywhere!

6. How to cook more than just beans on toast

This one is actually pretty important – if not the most important. Learning to enjoy food, experimenting with ingredients and trying new things will help our kids develop healthy eating habits – a foundation for life.

7. How to tell a good joke (and not spoil the punch line)

Everyone needs a good laugh every now and then.

8. How to make a paper boat so that it floats

And doesn't sink to the bottom of the river… a skill that shouldn't be looked over.

9. That family should always come first

At the end of the day, when all your friends have gone home, family is what is there to support you. And family is also pretty good at sharing moments of joy – exactly what you need to get you through the tough times.

10. To avoid unnecessary drama

Because it's not going to get you anywhere.
