Supporting your IVF Journey with Acupuncture – What to Expect
Navigating IVF can feel like an absolute rollercoaster—full of hope, packed schedules, and plenty of overwhelming moments. If you’re looking for a gentle, natural way to support both your mind and body right now, acupuncture is a wonderful companion to your medical care.
It’s safe, deeply relaxing, and backed by plenty of encouraging research showing how it works alongside your medical team to help give you the best possible chance of success.
How Acupuncture Helps Your Body
Think of acupuncture as giving your reproductive system a helping hand right when it needs it most:
– Boosts Blood Flow: Studies show acupuncture helps relax blood vessels, encouraging a rich supply of oxygen and nutrients to your uterus and ovaries. This supports egg development and helps build a thick, healthy lining (Zhong et al., 2019).
– Balances Hormones: Research shows it gently prompts your brain and ovaries to communicate smoothly, helping balance key hormones like oestrogen and progesterone.
– Melt Away Stress: By triggering your body’s natural endorphins, acupuncture shifts you out of ‘fight-or-flight’ mode and lowers cortisol (the stress hormone). Creating a calm, rested environment is so important for implantation.
– Calms the Uterus: Tailored transfer protocols (based on clinical research like the Paulus protocol) help relax the uterine muscles around embryo transfer day, giving your embryo a calm space to settle.

Your Treatment Timeline:
1. The Prep Phase (Ideally 3+ months before your cycle)
– How often: Once a week.
– Why it helps: It takes about 90 days for an egg to fully mature. Starting early gives us a fantastic window to support egg quality, tune up your hormones, and build up that uterine lining before medications even begin.
2. Your Active IVF Cycle
– How often: Once a week during stimulation, leading up to egg retrieval.
– Why it helps: Each session is tailored to where you are in your cycle—helping ease medication side effects, supporting your ovaries, and keeping your mind feeling calm and grounded.
3. Embryo Transfer Week
– How often: 3 total sessions.
– 2 sessions: On transfer day (or within 24–48 hours before and after).
– 1 session: 3 to 5 days after your transfer.
– Why it helps: The sessions around transfer day help relax the uterus and ease transfer-day jitters. The follow-up session supports you right in the middle of the two-week wait.
Pursuing a Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET) or Donor Egg Cycle?
Preparation is just as meaningful! We’ll focus 1–3 months beforehand on prepping your uterine lining and keeping stress low, followed by the same 3-session transfer week support.
Acupuncture is a safe, restorative addition to your fertility journey, offering you a quiet space to breathe, recharge and feel supported every step of the way. Plus, treatments are covered by all major Irish heal insurers.
