Strangers are sending handwritten letters to breast cancer patients - and you can too

When you're faced with something like breast cancer, there are so many emotions that you will have to battle through.

So something like a handwritten letter, simple though it may be, could be a massive help in overcoming those feelings of worry.

This is what Girls Love Mail does – and because of them, 125,000 letters have been delivered to patients.

This nonprofit asks strangers to write letters of love and encouragement to women going through treatment.

Launched in August 2011, the people behind the pens have ranged from fourth graders to 90-year-olds across the globe.

And the recipients have been so appreciative of the supportive messages.

One patient said, “I received a note from a complete stranger and it was so powerful.''

''Now I keep the letter on my nightstand and read it every night before bed to gain strength. I’m amazed at the kindness in this world.”

Gina Mulligan, the founder of the nonprofit, got the idea after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009.

“Letters were all around me, and I realised letters are a precious gift with the power to heal,” says Gina.

She wants to get enough letters to send to every woman who receives a breast cancer diagnosis – which is approximatively 250,000 per year.

We think that it's a wonderful idea and it shows the power of an old-fashioned letter.
