Seven simple ways to cut your energy bills before winter arrives

September is here and while the back-to-school chaos is still very much alive in most households, something else is quietly creeping up behind you: winter. The heating will be going on before you know it and with it comes that familiar dread of watching your energy bills climb week by week.

The good news is that taking action right now, before the cold truly bites, can make a real difference to what you end up paying. Energy comparison site Switcher.ie has put together seven practical tips that could save Irish households hundreds of euro this winter, and some of them take no more than twenty minutes.

The big ones: switching, grants and allowances

If you haven’t looked at your energy supplier in the past year, there’s a decent chance your introductory discount has quietly expired and you’ve rolled onto a standard tariff without realising it. Switcher.ie says switching supplier can shave up to €585 off your annual bill, and if you’re out of contract, it costs nothing to move. It’s one of those jobs that feels boring but pays off immediately.

Worth knowing too: the Department of Social Protection’s Fuel Allowance (€38 per week) will start paying out from late September. If you think you might be eligible, don’t wait until then to apply. Check MyWelfare.ie now to confirm your eligibility. For the first time, the scheme is open to Working Family Payment recipients, and income thresholds for over-70s have been expanded, so it’s worth a proper look even if you’ve been knocked back before.

On a bigger scale, the SEAI offers grants for attic and cavity wall insulation that can stop up to 30% of your home’s heat from disappearing through the roof. Low-income households may qualify for a fully funded upgrade at zero cost. Even if you don’t fall into that category, the grants cover a significant portion of installation costs and the long-term savings on heating bills can reach up to €600 a year.

The quick wins you can do this week

Some of the most effective tips on Switcher’s list cost very little and can be done in an afternoon. Bleeding your radiators before you turn the heating on for the season is one of them. Trapped air stops hot water from filling the radiator properly, which means your boiler is working harder than it needs to. A radiator key costs a few euro and the job takes minutes per radiator.

Pair that with some basic draught-proofing: a door snake along the bottom of the front door, foam weatherstripping around leaky window frames, or a chimney balloon if you have a fireplace you don’t use. None of it is glamorous but it genuinely keeps the heat in.

If you’re on a smart tariff or thinking about switching to one, running heavy appliances like the washing machine, dishwasher and tumble dryer during off-peak hours (overnight or outside the 5pm to 7pm peak window) can cut running costs significantly. Switcher.ie estimates you could save up to €537 a year by moving from a standard tariff to a cheaper smart plan and shifting your usage accordingly.

Don’t leave the boiler until the last minute

This one is for everyone who thinks they’ll deal with the boiler “when the weather turns”. By October, registered gas and oil technicians are booked solid, and emergency call-out rates in the middle of winter are eye-watering. An unserviced boiler can burn up to 10% more fuel to produce the same heat, so the service pays for itself pretty quickly.

Book an RGI-registered gas technician or an OFTEC oil technician now, while there’s still availability, and go into winter knowing your heating system is running as efficiently as it can be.

A little early bird planning will keep you warm, comfortable and safe from nasty bill shocks when the first frost arrives.”

It might feel like one more thing on an already very long list, but tackling even two or three of these tips this month could genuinely make this winter a lot less financially painful. And honestly, with everything else going on in September, cheaper heating bills would be very welcome.
