Preparing for a new baby... when you don't have much cash

Babies need a lot of stuff, and totting up the numbers can actually be quite terrifying. From a car seat to nappies, money can become the main topic of conversation when you find out Baby is on the way.

However, it shouldn't be all about money; there are plenty of ways you can keep costs down without sacrificing anything really.

1. Only buy what you NEED

A changing table is a luxury item if you don't have any spare cash, a mat or even your lap can work just as well. Same goes with maternity bras; they ARE really handy but not if you won't be eating for a week because you spent €30 on it.

2. Hound family and friends for any hand-me downs

Your baby is NOT going to care that the cot they are in is over ten years old (once it adheres to today's safety guidelines then you should be OK). The same goes with strollers and baby baths.

3. Borrow anything and everything

Breast pumps can be expensive but not if you use your mate's

4. Ask for practical gifts (nappies and wipes) or vouchers

We don't mean organise a baby shower and write down what you want… more if they ask what you need then be honest. Alternatively you can always get your mum to spread the word that you'd prefer a hamper of nappies and wipes than another baby grow.

5. Pick up only what you need now

You can always get the walker, bouncer and play pen as your baby grows (if at all). Only spend on the things that you know you can't borrow, but urgently need now. Everything else can wait for a few months (or until you have a little more cash).

6. Find special offers and stock up

Whenever you see a two-for-one offer grab it with both hands, especially on anything nappy-related. You can never have too many nappies, wipes and cream so stock up now.
