Mum shares her heartbreak at leaving the hospital without her babies

Carly Kinehan and her husband struggled to get pregnant for some time, before eventually being blessed with twins through IVF.

Her twins, a boy and a girl, were clearly excited to see their mum and dad, deciding to surprise them and visiting earlier than expected.

So, at just 33-weeks pregnant Carly underwent a C-section and her beautiful babies, Zoe and Slater, came into the world.

Upon their arrival Carly shared: “When the respiratory doctor put them both by my face, I shut my eyes and my world stopped completely. It was the moment I had been waiting for.”

As the twins were premature though, they were both taken to the NICU where Carly shares her thoughts on what the experience felt like as a new mum, on bunbunbook.

“The rest of the week was an emotional roller coaster. Then I had a full day where I cried feeling guilty that they came too early. I had carried them for 8 months…had I now failed them?”

“I’d look at their IV’s, oxygen tubes and wires, and just couldn’t stop blaming myself (exhaustion didn’t help). I felt awful. I couldn’t let it go.”

But eventually, with the help of her doctor’s reassurance, the new mum realised it is just nature’s way.

However, Carly explained what it was like to be discharged from hospital, leaving her tiny babies behind her in the NICU, and we could only begin to imagine the process…

“I thought I had it together, but as I kissed them goodnight, one tear slipped and opened the flood gates.”

“I had waited for them for so long. And now I had to wait longer? I felt robbed of the whole birthing process I had dreamed about. A mother should never have to leave her babies.”

Taking to Instagram, Carly also posted a photo alongside her tiny humans contemplating the reality of being home without them:

“It was heartbreaking to leave you behind at the hospital tonight with your empty car seats in our car and your going home outfits still in my bag.”

“But just as I predicted, you two are the strongest little fighters.”

Carly really gives a true insight into how heartbreaking it is for a mum to have to leave her babies behind, but for her to know they are in the best care comes with it's comforts too.

Did you have to leave your little ones behind you for their first couple of weeks in this world?

We applaud all the mums for keeping strong through such a difficult time.
