Mum answers your pregnancy questions with the help of a balloon and ping pong ball

Childbirth is a fantastic yet terrifying process. Not only are you pushing an entire human out of you, but there's so many other things that go on during labour that can be scary for any mum, whether new or veteran.

Well fear not, because this viral video featuring a balloon and a ping pong ball (yes, you heard me right) is here to put your mind at ease.

When Liz Chalmers, from Washington, videoed one of her favourite teaching techniques she did not expect that massive response it received.

Mum-of-four and co-owner of  Puget Sound Midwives and Birth Center in Washington, told Babble  that she's been using the balloon/ping pong demonstration for 11 years. She decided to record it for her niece Charlotte who is in the process of also becoming a birth instructor.

The video starts with Chalmers explaining how to insert that ping pong ball (or, eh, baby) into the balloon (the womb). As she shows how to insert the ball she quips about the ball getting stuck; "Stuck is a word we don't like associated with childbirth"

Next, Chalmers inflates the balloon halfway letting the ball settle at the neck of the balloon, which functions as the cervix.

She then continues to demonstrate how contractions actually work. By beginning to squeeze the top of the balloon we can see the uterus balloon lengthening and beginning to push the ball down.

Just like in real childbirth, Chalmers encourages the viewers to "squeeze and let go".

We can see the neck of the balloon shorten with the ball slowly coming to the mouth of the balloon. With one final push the ping pong ball shoots out.

Chalmers advises that mothers take the demonstration home to show older children how babies are born, or even to a "boring office meeting".

Whether it is her calming demeanour, no nonsense attitude or quick sense of humour, Chalmers is essential viewing for anyone wanting to understand more about childbirth.

We absolutely love her!
