Mount Congreve in Waterford Has Launched Two Beautiful Summer Escapes

There’s a particular kind of tiredness that sets in around late June. It’s not the regular kind — it’s the accumulated weight of nine months of school runs, packed lunches and homework battles. What you actually need, somewhere deep in your bones, is two nights where absolutely nobody needs anything from you. Or failing that, somewhere beautiful enough that you almost don’t mind.

Mount Congreve Gardens in County Waterford has just launched two new summer stay packages, and they’re the kind of thing that makes you open a new browser tab before you’ve even finished reading. One is built entirely around families wanting a proper digital-detox adventure in nature. The other is a couples’ escape that involves rosé wine, a gate lodge hidden inside a historic estate entrance and after-hours access to some of the most breathtaking gardens in the country. You can take your pick — or, if you’re feeling ambitious, do both a fortnight apart.

The Free-Range Family Escape

The Free-Range Family Escape is Mount Congreve’s answer to the eternal summer question of what exactly you do with children when screens are confiscated and the novelty of the back garden has worn off entirely. The package puts families up for two nights in one of three Forest Eco Cabins — Maple, Fern or Beech — tucked into the woodland of the 70-acre estate.

The cabins themselves are a serious step up from a tent. Think tongue-and-groove panelling, warm timber floors, proper beds and private outdoor hot tubs. The estate surrounds you with ancient woodland, 16km of winding pathways and the kind of green quiet that children respond to far better than you’d expect once you actually get them off the Wi-Fi.

The package covers two adults and two children under 16 and includes a welcome family hamper, full garden admission throughout the stay, access to the woodland playground (tunnel slides, hammock swings, climbing adventures, seesaws — the works), complimentary adult bike hire and a scenic trip aboard the Waterford Suir Valley Railway along the River Suir and the Waterford Greenway. There are children’s garden activity sheets to keep little ones engaged, and one of those simple pleasures that somehow never gets old: feeding the ducks at the Garden House.

Breakfast, lunch and treats are available daily at The Stables Café on the estate. The Free-Range Family Escape is priced from €795 per family for two nights, subject to availability.

Summer at the Gate Lodge

For couples, Mount Congreve has launched Summer at the Gate Lodge — five beautifully restored historic gate lodges scattered across the estate, each named after trees and plants from the gardens themselves: Oak, Acorn, Damson, Rowan and Whitfield. Whitfield is a five-minute drive from the main estate rather than within it, but all five offer the kind of privacy and slow pace that you can’t manufacture anywhere else.

Damson, Rowan and Whitfield Gate Lodges are dog-friendly, which is worth noting if your four-legged companion has been giving you guilt trips about being left behind on previous breaks.

The two-night package for two adults includes a welcome hamper, exclusive after-hours garden access, complimentary bike hire for the Waterford Greenway, private garden space with BBQ facilities and a luxury wine cooler bag with wine glasses, napkins and a waiter’s friend already inside it. There’s also a complimentary chilled bottle of rosé included — the intention being that you fill that cooler bag and wander into the gardens for a long, unhurried evening under the trees.

Complimentary late check-out is included too, which is quietly one of the best things any hotel or estate can offer. No alarm clocks. No rush. Breakfast and lunch are available daily at The Stables Café, and residents’ menus can be pre-ordered if you’d prefer to stay in your own bubble entirely.

The Summer at the Gate Lodge package starts from €885 for two nights, subject to availability.

Worth the trip to Waterford

Mount Congreve Gardens sits in the heart of County Waterford — well placed for a weekend away from Dublin, Cork or anywhere else that’s been feeling a bit relentless lately. The estate is already one of Ireland’s most celebrated garden destinations, and the addition of these overnight packages genuinely changes how you can experience it. Spending two nights inside those grounds, rather than rushing a single afternoon visit, is a completely different thing.

Whether you’re planning a family escape that gets the kids properly outdoors or a couples’ retreat that actually involves switching off rather than just saying you will, both packages are worth a serious look. For more information or to book, visit mountcongreve.com.
