Knitted boobs are an actual thing... and we CANNOT get enough of them

Having a mastectomy is an experience no one ever wants to have.

Sadly, however, it’s believed one in eight will undergo the operation at some point in their lives.

The emotional procedure can leave women feeling self-conscious and the six week healing period is quite a difficult time.

That's why we are taking our hats off to Barbara Demorest – founder of Knitted Knockers, the now, world-wide organisation.

Barbara is a woman who knows all too well how difficult the journey can be, following her own breast cancer diagnosis in 2012.

Due to complications, the American had a long wait for reconstruction but needed something to wear upon her return to work.

Barbara was devastated to learn she would be unable to wear anything over her scar for six weeks as the traditional prosthesis was too heavy.

That was until a doctor’s visit, where she was informed about knitted prosthesis.

Feeling inspired, Barbara asked her friend Phyllis could these be made.

Days later, Phyllis produced the knitted breast – instantly making her feel confident again.

Knowing how life changing it was, Barbara formed a knitting group in her home-town.

Knitted Knockers are special hand-made breast prosthesis which are made by groups of knitters throughout the world.

They’re soft, comfortable and when inserted, take the shape and feel of a real breast.

Knitted Knockers can be worn as soon as the stitches are removed and with the pattern online you can even try this out at home.

As well as being used as prosthesis, they can be adjusted to fill the gap for breasts that are uneven and easily adapted for those going through reconstruction by removing the stuffing.

Ireland has its very own Knitted Knockers too, where they have kindly donated over 291 to women throughout the country this year alone.

Why not get involved? You can knit at your leisure in the comfort of your home or set up a knitting group in your village.

Check out their website for drop-off locations throughout Ireland too.

Looks like it’s time to brush up on your knitting skills folks, this is one initiative we are definitely getting to grips with.
