Just how important is the CE safety mark on our kids' toys?

Most of us are aware of the little CE safety mark we see on toys, but just how important is it?

Well, to put it simply, very.

The mark stands for Conformité Européenne, meaning European conformity, and must by law be displayed on toys sold throughout the EU. It means the product has been safety checked – and used correctly will not harm our kids.

However, a recent study has shown that one in three parents will choose a toy that comes without the safety mark.

The black market is rife with fake branded toys such as those by Disney, especially over Christmas, and cash-strapped parents on the hunt for a bargain are being taken in by these unscrupulous sellers.

Director at the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission Fergal O'Leary has issued a warning to warned parents to be vigilant about toy safety this Christmas.

“Product safety legislation imposes a duty on manufacturers to ensure that products placed on the market are safe and do not pose a risk to the health or safety of consumers,” he says.

“All toys must carry a CE mark, and toys or their packaging must contain the name and address of the manufacturer and the importer, if different.”

We urge you to stay vigilant mums and make sure all toys are marked and bought from a reputed seller. Making savings just isn't worth it if the toy is unsafe!
