Is Your Daily Coffee Habit Really Costing You €1,000 a Year?

You already knew coffee was non-negotiable. Now there’s a survey to prove it. New research commissioned by Currys Ireland, released ahead of World Coffee Day on 1st October, confirms what most of us figured out long before anyone asked: coffee is the hardest everyday pleasure to give up. Harder than social media. Harder than chocolate. Harder, apparently, than alcohol. At 52%, it came top of the list by a distance, and honestly, same.

The research also puts some eye-opening numbers on what that daily habit actually costs. Almost half of respondents (46%) typically spend between €4 and €4.99 on a single takeaway coffee. Five of those a week adds up to roughly €1,040 a year. That’s a family holiday. That’s a term’s worth of after-school activities. That’s an awful lot of money going into a paper cup.

We’re already voting with our feet — or our kettles

The rising cost of a café fix is clearly landing. More than half (52%) of people surveyed said they’re now making more coffee at home because of rising prices, while a third say they’re buying fewer coffees when out. And when people were asked where the best coffee they regularly drink comes from, 40% picked a local independent café — but 37% said their own home. That’s a remarkable gap to close, and it’s closing fast.

The numbers around our actual coffee behaviour are also wonderfully relatable. A full 48% admitted they’ve made a coffee specifically to procrastinate or avoid doing something at work. Forty-two per cent have made one and completely forgotten about it. A third have reheated a forgotten coffee in the microwave. Twenty-one per cent have hidden the good coffee from others in the house — and honestly, no judgement here whatsoever. Survival instincts are survival instincts.

Three quarters of us have our first cup within an hour of waking, while nearly a quarter are reaching for it within 15 minutes. If you’re doing the school run on fumes and caffeine alone, you are very much in the majority.

The case for a decent coffee machine at home

Here’s where it gets interesting for anyone who’s been quietly eyeing up a proper machine. A full 60% of those surveyed said they would definitely buy fewer takeaway coffees if they could make café-quality coffee at home. Quality is the real draw — 49% said being able to make coffee-shop-standard cups at home would be the biggest incentive to upgrade their set-up.

And people are willing to invest. Almost six in ten (59%) said they’d spend €200 or more on a coffee machine, with 28% prepared to go between €300 and €499 and 11% willing to spend €500 or more. When you’re looking at €1,000-plus a year going on takeaway cups, suddenly a mid-range machine starts to look like very sensible maths.

A spokesperson for Currys Ireland put it plainly: “Coffee is an important part of the daily routine for many of us, but buying it out regularly can quickly add up. With more than half of respondents now making more coffee at home as prices rise, it’s clear people are looking for ways to enjoy their favourite cup while keeping an eye on costs. Whether it’s a pod, espresso or bean-to-cup machine, there are options for different tastes and budgets.”
