So, THIS is what happens to your body after giving birth

We all know what happens to our body during labour – bleeding and dilating being the two main things – but it's what happens AFTER that, even with all the info out there, STILL surprises a few of us.

However, Dr Daghni Rajasingam from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, has shined some light on what happens to our body (the vagina in particular) once Baby is born, and we are highly intrigued.

Talking to the Independent, Dr Rajasingam, explained that during labour the pelvic floor is stretched (something we are all well aware of…), however, while doing pelvic floor exercises help, it will never return to exactly how it was before.

"For the majority of the woman, it goes back to being not entirely what it was before but a degree of what it was like," he explained.

"It is a bit like a cut: some women will heal with no scar at all, some women will heal with quite a big scar, it does vary. "

The vagina, on the other hand, can go back to normal after six weeks, with bruising and swelling being reduced within this time.

"The vagina is an extremely forgiving part of the body, it can be very swollen and can look quite distressing to some people but after six weeks when the healing has happened it can go back to looking quite normal."

And while us mums know that we will bleed for up to six weeks after giving birth, not everyone is aware that this puts them at risk of infection.

"Infection after having a baby is a real risk, for example blowing your nose and going to the toilet can be risky and we advise women about things like this after birth," Dr Rajasingam added.
