IKEA's new collection is giving grown-up homes permission to play

If you've ever walked through your sitting room and thought "this place needs more fun", IKEA has heard you. The Swedish furniture giant is launching a collection that's basically permission to let your home be a bit silly, a bit playful and a lot more interesting than beige minimalism.

The GREJSIMOJS collection (don't worry, it translates to "thingamajig" so you're grand if you can't pronounce it) is landing in February 2026 with 33 pieces designed to bring play back into homes for all ages. And honestly? It's about time someone remembered that adults deserve nice things that are also a bit ridiculous.

This isn't your standard flat-pack furniture drop. IKEA's designers were given the freedom to think like kids again and the results are properly brilliant. We're talking furry chair covers for the classic MAMMUT chair in hot pink or blue, storage boxes shaped like cats, speakers that look like purple mice and a storage pouffe that reveals a cheeky monster face when you open it. There's even a rocking bird that's half sculpture, half toy.

Designed With Actual Play in Mind

Anna Granath, Range Identity Leader for IKEA, explains the thinking behind it all. "GREJSIMOJS is meant to be a visible part of the home furnishing with objects that are beautifully designed to fit the home, even after the children have gone to bed. Our designers had the freedom to play when they designed this collection, to bring both the perspective of an adult and a child."

It's a smart approach really. How many times have you bought something "for the kids" that you then have to hide away because it's an eyesore? This collection is designed to look class while still being something a toddler can actually interact with.

Some of the designers drew from memories of the objects they desperately wanted to touch as children but weren't allowed near. Others found inspiration in unlikely places. Marta Krupińska, one of the in-house designers, created the giraffe lamp after noticing how turning a lamp resembled a gentle head movement. "Every time someone walked by my desk, the prototypes of my giraffe lamp received a pat on the head and the storage cats a belly rub," she says. "Young or old, there are certain objects that remind us that there is creativity in the everyday."

Why Play Matters (Yes, Even for Us)

The collection isn't just whimsical for the sake of it. IKEA's Play Report found that 54% of parents want to play more with their kids but struggle with time, space and inspiration. The research also shows that play reduces stress, boosts creativity and brings people together. Which, let's be honest, we could all use a bit more of.

"We know that there is a lot of pressure on parents today and we don't want to put another must on them but rather encourage play to become a natural part of the home," says Maria Törn, Range Area Manager for Children's IKEA. It's not about adding another item to your already overwhelming to-do list. It's about creating an environment where play just happens naturally.

The collection is based on IKEA's Playtypes framework, which identifies five styles of play: Explore, Create, Imagine, Move and Compete. The pieces are designed to encourage these different types of interaction without you having to think too hard about it. They're just objects you can't help but touch and be intrigued by.

A Collection That Gives Back

There's also a charitable element that makes this whole thing even more appealing. From 1st February to 26th April 2026, €1 from every sale in the GREJSIMOJS range will go to Community Connect, Ireland's Baby Bank. They work to ensure babies and children have the essentials they need to thrive, providing gently used equipment, clothing and items to families who are struggling.

Since 2019, Community Connect has grown massively, supporting thousands of families across Ireland. So when you buy that furry pink chair cover or monster pouffe, you're also helping give another family a proper start.

The full GREJSIMOJS collection launches globally in February 2026 across all IKEA markets. Whether you've got kids tearing around the place or you just fancy making your home a bit more fun for yourself, this might be worth a look. After all, who says grown-ups can't have nice things that make them smile?
