Hero firefighters rescue a mother and baby deer trapped in a storm basin

Hero firefighters came to the rescue of two deer that got themselves into quite a pickle.

A mother and her baby managed to get stuck in a retention pond, which is a manmade basin used to manage stormwater.

The walls of the basin loom between 15 and 30 feet high, so the pair were well and truly trapped.

During a post on Facebook, the Cherokee County Firefighters in Georgia said that the two had been there for quite some time.

Ladders were used by the crew to scale the walls and reach the yearling, who was "a bit thin and looked weak from her time in the pond."

However, the young animal still had some fight within her and it took the crew around 30 minutes to corner and rescue the doe.

Her mother was a much more straight-forward rescue and it took only 15 minutes to bring her to safety.

The deer were transferred to animal control and will eventually be released back into a wooded area within the Cherokee County.

On Facebook, the crew was thanked and honoured for their work.

One user wrote: "Great job. Thank you for your love and compassion for wildlife."
