Getting back into the dating scene with a toddler in tow
Dating is tough enough without having to consider your toddler with each man that asks you out. However, it is important that you do get back out there even if you aren’t looking for that someone special, because you never know who you might meet. And if you’re not going to get back with your ex, it’s definitely time to move on.
Knowing when you are ready
You don’t need to enter the dating world as soon as your divorce is finalised or as straight after your relationship breaks down – there is no set time. Whether it is one month, two months, six months, a year or more, the best time for you to get back out there is when you feel ready.
Keep the two separate for a bit
When you do finally get back out there, it is important you try to keep your toddler and your dating separate to each other. Meet the date outside the home until you have developed a healthy enough relationship where both of you are ready to move onto the next stage and you feel it is the right time to introduce them to your toddler.
It is important you don’t bring every date home as it can confuse your toddler. And while it is important to wait until your relationship is a little more stable, you can’t be sure if it is forever and there always the risk that your date and your toddler will develop a bond, only for the relationship to break down. This is all part and parcel of life and shouldn’t stop you getting close with someone.
Dealing with jealously
When you do start dating, prepare for your toddler to become a little jealous and even clingy. Help them feel more secure by spending extra time with just them doing things that you both like together.
Be open and honest with your date
While you don’t have to give them your full life story as soon as you meet it is important that you are open and honest with your potential partner. This will prevent you getting close to someone who is simply not ready or willing to take on someone else’s child. it will save yourself a lot of heartache.
