Dublin's Free Summer Weekends Are Coming and Families Will Love Them

Six weekends. Zero entry fees. And a city centre that’s about to become one giant playground for families. If you’ve been quietly dreading the words “I’m bored” on repeat from now until September, Dublin City Council may have just saved your summer.

The council has announced the return of Summer in Dublin, a free programme of weekend events running every Saturday and Sunday throughout July and August. It’s aimed squarely at families, designed to get kids outdoors and off screens, and it won’t cost you a penny to attend.

Each weekend has its own theme, so there’s a genuine reason to keep coming back rather than it being a one-and-done outing. Think circus performers, storytelling, creative workshops, nature activities, immersive experiences and large-scale street play spread across Dublin city centre. It’s the kind of thing that makes a brilliant spontaneous day out or a proper planned family trip into town.

What’s on and when

The programme kicks off this coming weekend with Blossoms & Bees (4–5 July), celebrating nature, biodiversity and outdoor discovery. Perfect if you’ve got little ones who are into bugs, flowers and poking at things in the garden — only this time with actual expert beekeepers on hand.

The following weekend sees Circus in the City (11–12 July) bringing high-energy acrobatics and street spectacle to the city. If your kids have ever watched a circus act on YouTube and then tried to balance on the sofa arm, this one might be just the outlet they need.

Then comes Alice in the City (18–19 July), an imaginative, fantasy-inspired weekend that sounds absolutely magical for younger children. Giant props, costumed characters and Wonderland-inspired experiences are all part of the plan.

Hearts & Crafts (25–26 July) is the creative weekend, with hands-on workshops that’ll suit children who love making and doing. On Saturday 25 July there’s also a dedicated Family Fun Day in Dublin with sensory play areas, face painting, music and games — worth putting a ring around that one in particular if you have very young children.

August brings Wellness World (1–2 August), focused on relaxation, balance and wellbeing. Yes, even the kids could probably do with a weekend of that after six weeks of summer. The programme wraps up with Playtime on Parliament Street (8–9 August), which promises interactive games and large-scale street play.

Why this matters for Dublin families

Summer holidays are brilliant in theory and absolutely relentless in practice. Between the cost of camps, the constant negotiating over screen time and the near-daily logistics of keeping children entertained without losing the plot entirely, a free drop-in programme in the city centre is genuinely useful.

The events are designed to be accessible and welcoming for all ages, which means you’re not hauling a toddler somewhere that’s really geared for eight-year-olds and above. The mix of themes across the six weekends also means different children will find their own thing to love — whether that’s the circus spectacle, the crafty workshops or the full-on fantasy of the Alice weekend.

Dublin city centre can feel a bit overwhelming with small children in tow but the idea of a purposefully family-friendly weekend programme changes that dynamic. It turns the city into somewhere to linger rather than rush through.

Plan your visit

All events are free and take place across Dublin city centre every weekend in July and August. No booking information has been provided so it’s worth checking the Summer in Dublin programme directly for the latest details on locations and timings before you head in.

With six weekends to work with, there’s no pressure to do it all at once. Pick the themes that suit your family best, keep it in your back pocket for those days when everyone needs to get out of the house and just see where you end up.
