Family Life

Delightful family day out only an hour’s drive from Dublin.

The hot subject these days are staycations and daytrips.  Trying to keep the kids happy and entertained is quite the task with less summer camps and activities than ever before.    We’ve only recently discovered the fantastic Loughcrew House & Gardens in Co Meath which we now think of as one of Ireland’s best-kept secrets.

The picturesque Loughcrew parkland comprises a medieval motte, prehistoric cairns and Saint Oliver Plunkett’s 17th century family church, marking where the martyred saint grew up. The estate has all kinds of activities for young and old complete with stunning gardens, water features, statues, and super family amenities including a café and playgrounds, an enchanting fairy trail, leisurely walks, hiking and biking.

The venue is popular for extended family getaways, weddings, and exclusive hens and stag parties, where dining and a variety of pampering, arts and outdoor activities can be arranged.

Day-trippers are welcomed to the estate for picnics, garden tours and family fun on the fairy trail, in the woodlands, and the historic surroundings. Loughcrew Estate is close to the Boyne Valley, just outside Oldcastle, and estate admission is €7.50 for adults, with extensive free car and coach parking on-site.
