Mum-to-be refused to step back from miscarriage storyline

Revealing that script writers had developed a storyline in which her character suffers a miscarriage, Nicola Wheeler who plays Nicola King in Emmerdale, admits that while the subject matter is extremely sensitive, she decided to continue with her character’s journey.

Opening up about the sensitivity shown by the show’s production team, Nicola said: “Emmerdale would have changed the storyline if I wasn’t OK with it, which was really nice. But you have a responsibility.”

Admitting that the subject is close to her heart, the 40-year- actress revealed: “I do think it’s an important part of pregnancy to show because it is devastating. I’ve had friends who have had miscarriages and it’s a really tough time to go through.”

Although determined to continue telling Nicola King’s story, the mum-to-be admitted some reservations, saying: “There’s an element of you that thinks, ‘If I’m doing a not-so-happy storyline, is that affecting my body or my baby?’

Determined to draw a line between her personal and professional life, the star told The Sun newspaper: “Being pregnant is my private life but I’m hired as an actor to perform what they give me.”

Nicola recently filmed her final scenes and has gone on maternity leave from the long-running soap.
