Can I dye my hair during pregnancy?
There are a lot of myths surrounding the use of hair dye during the different trimesters and it can be difficult for mums to know what the right thing to do is.
When you use hair dye, a small amount of the chemicals present can penetrate your skin. Generally though, hair dye isn’t thought to pose harm to your developing baby.
A 2005 study suggested an association between the use of hair dye during pregnancy and the childhood cancer neuroblastoma; however, other studies have not reached the same conclusion. Most researchers say it’s unlikely that the use of hair products before or during pregnancy is harmful to your unborn infant.
If you do decide to continue to dye your hair, it is important that you always follow the directions given with the package. Remember to wear gloves when applying the colour to reduce the risk of absorption through the skin and never leave the dye on for longer than the recommended period of time.
You should also remember to always work in a well ventilated area and try to avoid breathing in the fumes as much as possible. When you have finished make sure you rinse your scalp thoroughly to clear away any excess residue.
If you are still concerned about dying your hair, try waiting until you are in your second trimester; your developing baby is less vulnerable at this stage. If you do have any concerns during your pregnancy, it is important that you seek the advice from your midwife or GP.
In the end, it is up to the mother to decide if colouring her hair will make her feel good or if it will just leave her worrying needlessly for the rest of her pregnancy.
Remember to always go with your best judgement and listen to the advice of your doctor.
