Antenatal classes
Becoming pregnant for the first, second and even third time can be quite daunting and many mums feel overwhelmed by questions and fears.
Expectant mothers – and even dads-to-be – can benefit from attending an antenatal class where all questions and concerns can be addressed.
Birthing or antenatal classes cover a wide range of topics surrounding pregnancy and labour, helping both you and your partner prepare for this exciting new chapter in your lives.
Mums-to-be will usually attend classes in their third trimester, although some may go earlier if they feel it will be of benefit. Your hospital will provide you with an antenatal class from your 30th week, but you can choose to attend a private birth class if you wish.
Classes will offer information on the following:
- Your baby’s development week-by-week.
- Warning signs you should look out for.
- Breathing and relaxation techniques.
- Pain relief options.
- When to go into hospital.
- What to expect during labour.
They will also address things that happen once the baby arrives such as the emotional aspects of parenthood, returning to work, childcare arrangements and most will offer breastfeeding support and advice.
Classes will help you with the big decisions, such as what kind of birth you want, the best way to get pain relief and how to go about making your own birth plan. You may not use the techniques from your classes in your actual pregnancy, but you will benefit from being around other expectant mothers, especially if you don’t know anyone else who is pregnant.
Soon-to-be fathers also have a lot to gain from taking these classes as they will begin to feel more involved in the process and will know what to expect during labour. They will also be given advice on how to help you feel more comfortable during the birth, which will certainly be a plus for you.
Birthing classes will help you feel more confident about giving birth so that you can make informed decisions. You will also be creating wonderful memories as you laugh at the awkward times and learn new things together.
