7 kitchen hacks that will make a mum’s life SO much easier

Why is it that no matter how big or small our kitchen is there is just never enough room for storage or time for cleaning?

It just constantly ends up in a mess, no matter how many times we attempt to clean up, and even though we just took those saucepans out of the press, somehow there’s no room for them to go back in unless we stage a total reorganisation.

However, we have been lucky enough to find seven kitchen hacks that are bound to make our lives a little easier, and we just HAD to share them with you.

1. Using the inside of your presses

When you open your press door the shelves are packed, but what about the door frame itself? Use it for your convenience; make a spice rack inside the door, or use it to hang your measuring cups for baking. If you're feeling adventurous you could also put a chalk board with it to label the items.

2. Keep a removable container at the base of your sink

Keeping a plastic container at the sink is possibly the best invention ever. You will find one in most discount stores for little or nothing. Use it for rubbish such as tea bags and dinner scrapings. Empty twice a day, and you won’t have a need for a smelly corner bin in the kitchen. Or if that doesn’t work for you, use it to store dish cloths and drain plugs so they're not scattered around the sink.

3. Stop the water from boiling over

Sick and tired of boiling pasta or potatoes and the water just keeps over-flowing? It happens all the time. Genius move – take your wooden spoon and rest it horizontally across the saucepan. It will stop the water from over-flowing and staining your cooker.

4. Can never find what you’re looking for in the freezer?

Use plastic magazine racks to act as spare shelves in your freezer. Slide them in sideways for maximum storage space, you’ll then be able to actually see what you’re looking for AND you’ll have more room for ice-cream!

5. Use your bamboo steamer basket for storage

Your bamboo steamer is the best ventilated space you have so use it. Store onions, shallots and garlic in the weaved basket and chances are the veg will last longer than you’d ever expect and it’ll leave extra storage space in the fridge.

6. Stop your drain from clogging

A major problem if you have little ones who continuously throw things down the sink that don’t belong there… once a week or once every two weeks pour some baking soda down the drain, followed by boiling water. It will make sure oils run down the drain as opposed to building up on pipes which is what leads to clogging.

7. Rusting cutlery?

Easy peasy – lemon juice. Put some lemon juice in a jar or large glass and leave your rusted cutlery sitting in it for a couple of minutes. Take them out and then wipe the rust away. A hat-tip to prevent rusting: don’t put them in the dishwasher!
