Things to consider when decorating your toddler's room

Moving your child from their cot to a big boy or girl bed is a pretty big step. However, before the big move, you might have to do a little decorating, especially if they are going to be moving into the spare room that gets used about once every two years!

If you are going to be doing a little interior designing, here are a few things you need to consider when it comes to your toddler’s room;

Colour theme

While you are free to choose any colour that you like, try to keep it muted and brighten it up with accessories. This way, rather than re-doing the paint work as your little one grows, all you have to do is remove a few baby accessories and add more grown-up ones.

Furniture

Your little one doesn’t need much furniture in their room, yet. A bed and maybe a child-sized desk for them to draw on is usually enough. And when it comes to choosing a bed for your little one you can either go for a child-sized one or skip right ahead to a normal single bed. Whatever you choose make sure it’s durable and will stand the test of time – beds are expensive!

Safety

Make sure you consider your child’s safety in every aspect of their room. Don’t put their bed right near the window or in a draft and block any sockets with a safety plug. Make sure there are no cords hanging down from blinds or lights and that nothing is placed over your child’s bed that might fall on them.

Choose the correct lighting

Lighting is an important aspect of every room and the same goes for your little one’s. Choose soft lighting that will encourage sleep and invest in a night light, especially if this is the first time your little one has been in their own room.

Your child’s taste

There is no point decorating your little one’s room in princess colours if they don’t like pink and the same goes if your little one doesn’t like sports – there is no point decorating it with footballs if they can’t stand playing ball! While it might not seem like an important thing, remember it is your toddler’s room and they have to sleep in it!
