7 tips to survive a summer pregnancy

We all love a bit of heat, don’t we?

Well, apart from pregnant women, that is. Thanks to the extra blood flow, mums-to-be have higher-than-normal body temperatures during pregnancy. Add that to the fact that the extra pounds act as padding and you’re looking at a very uncomfortable season!

But whether we get a heatwave this summer, or you’re roped into going on holiday somewhere exotic, there are a few simple ways you can keep cool and comfy…

Ditch the salt

Not only will salt dehydrate you, it will also make any swelling you experience much worse. But don’t eliminate it from your diet completely. A small bit is vital for your unborn baby’s health.

Get swimming

There’s nothing like a good dip to cool off. So if you’re at the beach, put your bump paranoia aside, strip down to your swimsuit and get dunking. Just be careful you don’t get out of your depths.

Drink up

If you get dehydrated, you’ll feel much worse. With that in mind, always bring a bottle of water with you when you leave the house, and even if you don’t think you’re thirsty, drink up at regular intervals.

Use a washcloth

If you find yourself getting too hot, place a cold, damp washcloth across your forehead. It’ll bring your body temperature down and stop you sweating so much. Plus, it’s portable – pop one into your handbag, completed with your bottle of water, and you’re good to go out!

Ditch the rings

We know, they’re pretty, but rings and heat do not happy fingers make! You can wear them in the evenings once the sun’s gone down.

Wear cool clothes

For maximum cuteness and comfort, opt for loose, light-coloured clothes. This will help to keep you from overheating, and will let any sweat evaporate. While we’re discussing suitable attire, remember that your choice of footwear matters too. Go for flat, comfy shoes to minimise discomfort.  

Go out…but stay in

When it’s too hot outside, it’s tempting to just stay at home, safe from the sun’s rays. But where’s the fun in that? If you want to get out and do something, focus on indoor entertainment. Window shopping, café-lounging and matinee cinema visits are all great ways to have fun in fab, air-conditioned surrounds.
