6 things you should never say to a woman after delivery

new mumA lot of women are prepared for the possibility of depression and the baby blues after birth. But, very few mums are prepared for the intensity of the emotions that come flooding in and sometimes, even the smallest remarks affect the fragile mind of a new mum.

Here are some of the things a new mum will never want to hear:

‘It sounds like you had an easy labour’

No woman ever wants to hear this after delivery – ever.

‘Oh, you aren’t breastfeeding?’

The decision to breastfeed lies with the mother and the mother only. Yes, other people may influence a new mum’s decision, but at the end of the day, it’s really not up to anyone else.

‘I can’t believe you gave birth at home’

Again, this is a personal choice. Some women prefer water births and others prefer to be in the surroundings of a hospital. It all comes down to personal choice really.

‘I’m glad I had a C-section, you must feel so stretched out’

Nothing good can ever come from a comment like. A woman’s body has been designed to give birth to a baby vaginally so if someone chooses to give birth the natural way then they shouldn’t be judged for it.

‘I can’t believe you had an epidural, I wouldn’t DREAM of doing that!’

The decision to have an epidural is no one’s business. Some women who say they wouldn’t have an epidural , end up getting one in the end and vice versa. Bottom line is, it’s no one else’s business.

‘Just sleep when the baby sleeps, you’ll be grand!’

Mums are often cranky and fatigue after birth so the last thing a sleep deprived mum needs is to be told to sleep when her baby does. Newborns have a broken sleep, so ‘sleeping when the baby does’ doesn’t work for everyone.
