Stunning photos show kick-ass power of breastfeeding mums

Mums are powerful creatures. They’re Amazonians. They carry and care, nourish and nurture.

Nowhere is this more apparent than in a stunning photography project which celebrates the beauty and intimacy of breastfeeding. The Milky Way Project (love the name!) is an empowering response to ill-informed negativity towards women who breastfeed. It loudly says: don't cover up, be proud, breastfeeding is the most natural thing in the world.

Spearheaded in Ireland by mum and photographer Kate Nolan, the project has seen Irish mums from Co. Galway bravely bare their boobs to portray a positive and inspiring image of the nursing mum to empower women all across the world.

The project kicked off in Poland, and Kate, inspired by a portrait of a breastfeeding woman, was keen to get involved.

Being a part of The Milky Way Project was a moving experience for me,” she says.

“I had the pleasure of witnessing the unique language and communication between a mother and her baby, a language of love that is individual to every mum and baby!”

The Project is much more than just a “breastfeeding promotion” she adds.

“It’s about the knowledge that inherently resides in every woman and how we access that knowledge, and how we must trust that which we already know. It is our way to inspire women to say, “I can do that!” “I want to do that!””

Kate is now planning an exhibition of The Milky Way Project in Spring 2016 and will donate all the funds raised to a soon-to-be-decided Irish charity relating to breastfeeding or newborn babies.
