DD1 has been talking about a sewing machine lately. And now that she is doing home ec she might become even more interested in it.
So I was half thinking of maybe getting her one for Christmas. But jeepers are they expensive. So I was looking at the mini sewing machines as they are cheap and if it is just a phase I won't be too bothered if it barely gets used.

So what I am asking is whether a mini sewing machine is any good and can you do more or less the same things on it as you can a normal sized one.

Wendy you honestly are better off getting a proper machine.
Lidl and aldi do them from time to time, but i dont know what the quality is like.

The Lidl/aldi ones are very good, those mini ones are a waste of money.

I also saw one in ikea recently. not sure of the quality but it seemed quite reasonably priced.

The mini sewing machine, from Lidl anyway, does not work as well as the proper sewing machine, I've sewn a bit and couldn't handle it, it only does a straight stitch, and does it badly.

This one from Argos might be OK, there used to be a Toyota under €100 that I have seen recommended, but it doesn't seem to be there now:

The Ikea one looks OK too.

I have used the Lidl one a lot, but I want to get a new one, but if it comes up I would recommend it.

I was in the Bernina shop on Parnell st today, they sell second hand machines, as does the Singer shop on Talbot St, I don't know details but it would be worth talking to them. I found them very helpful to talk to.

This site does new machines, but also used, it might be worth keeping an eye on:

ETA, would also suggest asking in the crafts and hobbies forum.
