Vegan mum arrested after her newborn baby was considered underweight

When her newborn son was just 12-days old, Sarah Markham was arrested as her little boy had lost 10% of his body weight.

The mum was ordered to take the child to hospital by a doctor, and when she refused and began feeding him a special vegan formula, she was arrested.

Sarah is now facing criminal charges for ‘neglect’ while her lawyer fights the charges, calling them ‘absurd’: “It’s a mom trying to do the best she can, acting as a vegan, which she has every right to do taking care of her child.”

At the moment, Sarah is only allowed to see her child a number of times a week.

Sarah has said that her parenting is in line with her religious beliefs as a Seventh-day Adventist, as her lawyer says: “She has done everything they’ve asked her to do: Mental health evaluations, drug evaluations, parenting classes, everything they’ve asked her to do she’s done and she’s done it every well, and yet we have to go to trial tomorrow. It’s absurd.”
