Must check my old one cos there was lots of good advice from people here...

Some suggested pool shoes instead of slippers (for using in shower as well), but I stuck with ordinary slippers in the end.

Old tshirt for labour, or nightshirt (deffo not pjs) - u want something u don't care about and that is long enough for decency walking the corridors (if using TENS, dressing gown may gape a little). I got 2 cheap nightshirts in Pennys - 1 was "Queen for a Day" and the other was also suitably positive!! A spare is handy for waters going early and making a big mess (or if there is a delay moving you to your room).

2 pairs granny knickers - you'll need 1 afterwards, and again prepare in case of delay. They're small.

Rescue remedy and lavendar oil. I had a tissue with a few drops lavendar in my dressing gown pocket, which I could sniff occasionally and wafted faint lavendar up all the time (heat from body through DG) which was really nice and relaxing.

Peppermint oil - to combat nausea. Hint was to put few drops on back of hand (but I didn't need it anymore by the time DH found it).

Face cloth as well as misting spray - can be dipped in cold water for either you to suck on, or DH to mop your brow (it makes them feel useful - and that really helps them. And I found it nicer than the spray personally).

Labello - your lips can get quite dry.

Heat and ice packs (I had this on my list as recommended, but actually forgot them in the end).

Towel in the labour bag - for all those long lovely power showers - they really realllllly help. I also had a travel sized nice mago shower gel, which smelt lovely and fruity and light, which I used once or twice in the shower.

Magazines, crosswords, sudokus etc - for both u and DH - we didn't need them, but many others have been glad of the advice. I had a new Top Gear for DH, which he was grateful for later on....
Music and a player for it (tapes/CD), batteries if required. Some labour suites have CD players, others don't. You may like your own tunes to help the relaxation process.

Disposable camera - in case you forget the main one as this can sit in the bag for weeks in readiness. New film for regular camera or batteries for digital.

OK that was the extras for labour bag - now for the afterwards bag....

I personally preferred pjs than nighties. Extra bottoms (although tops had nearly as many leaks) and button opening tops. Meant easier access for various things, and also a greater level of discretion and comfort when visitors were there (I wasn't afraid what was on show when I was sprawled on the bed). (Edited to add - hospitals are really warm, even in depths of winter, so bring loose cotton nightwear, you really won't want warm ones. And lightweight dressing gown too.)

Loads of maternity pads - I had to send DH out to buy more twice. Have a stock at home for hiom to bring in to you. Same goes for large knickers - lots.

Plenty of bras too - there can be a lot of leakage in the early days.

You may want a tracksuit or yoga pants type outfit for daytime - I stayed in PJ's but a lot of mum's got dressed. Think loose, sloppy. comfy.

Large seperate washbag for the loo - this holds a sportscap water bottle (which you fill with barely lukewarm water and a few drops tea tree to help when peeing and washing afterwards - so much easier on the stiches), the tea tree oil, witchazel (put a capful on the pads when you change them - oh the relief) and a clean knickers, as well as the disinfectant wipes. Refill this everytime you leave the loo, and it makes it much easier when you are hurrying in. (And also much more discrete when visitors there, or if you are sharing a room).

Arnica 200cc - for the bruising.
Throat lozenges - lots of people are quite hoarse afterwards.
Pulsatilla (for baby blues) - I never got around to getting this, but it was another recommendation in here.

Pack biscuits, small OJ's (I always need food and I found that times between meals could be very long, so fig rolls were my saviour).

Distractions - walkman, CD's, book, magazines, crosswords, sudokus, your own craft stuff - you may not have any time on your hands, but there may be nothing on tv, no visitors, and baby asleep for a while in a quiet room. Especially if you are there more than 1 day. Think of what you'd like for gaps to alleviate boredom yourself and remember concentration is often much lower than normal. I had a letterpad to write to my sister and they are wonderful letters to look at now.

Baby - I had a split between newborn and 0-3 mth babygrows and vests, in case of being v big or small.

Couple of plastic bags (for sending things home etc).

Stuff ready at home - extra pjs/nighties, knickers, bras etc (or get DH to wash and return those you have in hosp).
Extra clothes for baby.
Both your and baby going home outfits - leave ready so DH doesn't have to decide what goes with what (skinny jeans 3 days after birth - I have heard of it happening!!). Pick something comfy, bearing in mind you'll not have lost a lot of the bump yet - think about 5 months pg size. But try to get something flattering cos there will probably be pics (maybe a plain outfit but a nice piece of jewellery).
A bag for any pressies and cards you've received in hospital.
Presents for nurses/docs - not a requirement, but lots of people like to give them. Handy to have them ready beforehand (there's enough to think about afterwards).

Sorry this is long, but lots of things need an explanation (in my head anyway). Hope they help someone.

Just 2 things to add that I wish I had thought of -

1.fix the car seat into the car before you go in to the hospital!
this will save you sitting in the car with new baba while your partner struggles for 40 minutes to put it in!!

2. use proper maternity pads - they are made soft and cottony, whereas normal pads can make you sweat and cause more unnecessary itching and discomfort, especially if you have a lot of stitches, also the maternity pads are really long, so less leakage.

Would second the lavender oil - I added loads to a bath in the delivery suite while I was in early labour, and I stayed there for an hour.

I would recommend bringing maternity clothes in to travel home in - your tummy really doesn't go down very much in the first week or so.

One thing I found great was disposable bibs for babs, they were very handy and cut down on the washing for when you got home.

Also yes car seat make sure if you are the one putting it in the car for the imminent arrival you show DH how to take it out especially if it has a base as DH arrived base and all into hospital. It was quiet funny especially when he was shown up by our five year old who announced to the ward what he had done.

Just wanted to add that if you are going to Mt Carmel, they provide packets of the green maternity pads for you. I brought loads of my own but didn't use any until I went home. I loved the green pads for padding (stitches - ouch!) at the start but soon moved to the long Always with wings for heavy flow - purple pack, I think. They made me feel more human and were very comfortable.

Bring earplugs and an eye mask. I had neither of these but wished I had because I barely slept a wink the whole time there and I was on my own in the room! I will know better next time!

Nice food you like. No matter how nice the hospital food, you will find yourself craving. I didn't think to bring food but got my friend to get me jellies and Hula Hoops and chocolate! So next time, I will definitely bring myself a goodies stash!

You can't have enough pjs or granny pants! I bought a load of cheap packets of knickers in Penneys and just binned them. They were so much nicer than disposable. As for pjs, I had enough to change every morning and night because you sweat so much (and for leaks) it feels great to be fresh. And cotton, cotton, cotton.

Travel cot -

Something else I thought of for the hospital bag was plastic bags so you can send the dirty clothes home with someone.

I'd efinitely bring in food for post natal ward. The food is crap and not enough (esp for BF moms), try to get some high energy bars from the likes of Boots and some healthy options. I also found that everytime I fed my youngest I took two arnica tablets (for bruising) and a lucozade tablet with vit C for energy and healing. Felt fabulous after the birth and am sure it was helped by my little "regime"!!!

Hey -

I hardly get the time to post at all anymore but just thought I should add my tuppence - don't worry if you forget anything - shops will be open and DH or some other helpful family member will be willing to get anything you need - and they will provide you with the bare essentials in hospital if you're desperate.

I'm not naturally a very organised person and got myself into a tizzy over what to pack etc - the lists are a really helpful guide but i was seriously intimidated by other peoples organisational skills and tryed to pack everything in everyones list! In the end i didn't use half the stuff in my bag (and i was in hospital for a week before i had ds with pre eclamsia) and any stuff i wanted i sent dh/mother/mother in law etc to collect. TBH i think they were happy to be sent on errands to feel useful.

My tip don't worry if you go in with nothing but the clothes you are wearing - everything else is a bonus- my best friend had nothing organised due to early unxpected labour and managed fine.

I'm hoping this is the right place to post, WHEN do you pack the hospital bag? I was listening to Ryan Tubridy this morning (no sniggering  ) and he was interviewing a lady who had her baby at 35 weeks, so it's beginning to dawn on me that I should start  .

Tgirl, I've always started and nearly mine about 34/35 weeks and the books/mags I've read said 36 weeks. Usually finish the bag off the 1st week I am on ML.

Hi tgirl, I was listening to that story too, it was very moving.

I organised my bag between 35 and 37 weeks. Id say anytime from now for you is good to start getting organised. Despite what people say, I think the last few weeks fly by, especiially if you're working or have other kids....and even more so at this time of year!!!! Though as one of the other girls said, shops are always open and you'd never be stuck if you did go early.

This might be blindingly obvious but check what you have at home first. I had this idea that everything had to be new and went and bought new nightwear and new slipppers and everything adn then copped that I had loads of that sort of stuff at home so I dug out the old stuff and will use that in hosp cos alot of people say that the hospital stuff gets destroyed. I brought alot of the new stuff back and I think I'll buy some nice underwear instead of something with the money afterwards (Im optimistic). I did buy some of that Lounge wear in Dunnes in case Im in over xmas, id like to have something a bit fancy

Hello,

Anyone going to CUMH on Cork should note that there is no need to pack vests for the baby as its so hot in there that the midwives will tell you to dress them in babygrows only.

hope that lightens the load for some

Heres just a few of my own points...

I pack three separate wash bags (I know, I'm a bit of a control freak)!!!. First one is for labour ward. Second one holds all standard stuff for hospital stay, & third one is for loo trips only (spare knickers, sterilising wipes, witchazel, tea tree oil, maternity pads etc).
As there are some things that you will need in both the labour bag & the hospital bag, I keep a list of those items, for transfer after labour, so you don't forget anything. Then the entire labour bag can go home, no more rummaging & sorting needed. For cheaper items I just bought two & put one in each bag.

Re makeup, I don't think very many people bother... it's too hot anyway. But if you are the type of person that alwaays has her face on, then certaibly bring it.
Re perfume, I think it''s best avoided cos new babs doesn't need that sensory assault, they need to smell YOU.

A few things that I don't think were mentioned in previous posts...
NAIL FILE (my nails break all the time & I wouldn't want to catch them in babba or on anything else for that matter).
SHOWER CAP ( you may end up having lots of showers, & not always want to washyour hair, so thats why I kept the hotel ones!)
SPARE BRAS _ EXTRAS (when I had DS, my DP kept bringing things home to wash but never did wash them or bring them back, so I ended up having no bras - total disaster!!).
NAPPY SACKS - also handy to hang off crib for your own little bits of rubbish, saves getting out of bed!
STERILE SWABS - FOR UMBILICAL CORD (hospital should provide these while you are there but may forget (never even told me on DS) - you need to use after every nappy change for at least two weeks, so thats a lot of swabs. Swabs must be the type that are suitable for skin use, & for open wounds, many brands are for either dry skin or only for cleaning equipment).
COPIES OF BIRTH PLAN (bring several copies, with your name on all of them, as you may be dealing with lots of different staff members).
RAZOR FOR SHAVING & GEL/CREAM
BOX OF TISSUES
INSULATED PICNIC BAG & ICE PACKS (if no fridge available, these are REALLY handy for keeping things cool as the wards are so hot all your snacks & drinks will be roasting. An ESKIE box would actually be great, but you might get a few funny looks!).
CHARGER FOR CAMERA/PHONE Etc
DISPOSABLE CUPS, LARGE (you may find it hard to get/keep hold of drinking glasses in the hospital.
BABY NAIL CLIPPERS (baby may be born with quite ragged nails, though generally they advise you to very carefully bite them yourself initially & use a clipprs later, but I found the clippers handy from early on).
GLASSES CLEANING CLOTH (if you wear glasses, these are a godsend, no more streaks & smudges)
DENTAL FLOSS (even if you hardly ever use it, it's the type of thing that would drive me nuts to have something stuck in my teeeth and no floss!)
BIROS (seems simple, but you never know!)
BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT CARDS (you might just get a chance to write these, less likely after you are home!)

By the way, for anyone planning to breastfeed, don't bring or use any soothers (or bottles of any sort if at all possible), as they will interfere with the initial BF process. LIkewise it is not great to use breast shields while feeding, if at all possible, for the same reason. I found out the hard way, having done all of these things.

One thing that may seem odd but is actually a good idea if you have pets, particularly dogs! When babs is born, use a large old towel to wrap babs in for a short while (not necesarily immediately after birth, but in first day or so). Then send this towel home, smelling of baby, & put it in your dogs bed. That way the dog will be used to the smell of the baby before you get home, & maybe won't be quite so curious!

Hope this post isn't too long, & hope it might be of some help!
