I've a load of books to post off, about 16 pounds in weight. I think that a parcel is cheaper than a package, am I right in that? Anybody know the best way to post them?

you can calculate each one here.

you also might be cheaper splitting the parcels.

You can only send up to 2kg in a packet, so if you're sending them all together you'll have to send them by parcel post. It would cost you €25 approx to send 16lbs. The postage rates have rocketed so it's not really cheaper to split the packages up.

The rates changed on 1st May. I don't post a lot of stuff but I was buying stamps the other day and the lady in PO was telling me about all the changes.

I had an A5 envelope and she told me it was classed as a small packet or parcel (can't remember) but I know it cost me €1.55 to send.

An Post are very expensive once it's over 2kg.

Thanks - I thought that might be the case. Thanks for the link, AnnB, I'll give them a shout.

Actually just had this problem in work yesterday, I needed to post a small box - about the size of 5 cds, to post as a parcel was €20 but to post as a packet was €7.50 so I put the box into an envelope and made a packet out of it :lookround:
It was very light way less than 1k so I reckon I should be ok :bigups:

A small box qualifies as a packet. It's the dimensions that decide if something is a packet or a parcel. A shoebox is a packet. I often send boxes and they always qualify for the packet rate.

A tip for posting books is to open them out in the middle and put them in an A4 envelope like that - then it can go as an envelope ... only thing is they have lowered the weights on envelope class so not sure how good it works now with slightly heavier books

That actually makes a lot of sense, the lads in work had me doubting myself about whether it was a packet or a parcel
I even think €7.50 was overdoing it on the postage but as we have a franking machine and I wasnt actually going to the post office I thought I better be safe than sorry

You have to be careful with this as well because a large envelope can only be 22 mm deep. If its over that, it's a packet regardless of whether it's in an envelope or a jiffy bag etc.

As Ribbit said, it's all about the dimensions and weight, rather than the actual packaging.

Meant to say that but most 'regular' books opened out would be within the 22mm range and if they are a mm or 2 over it won't really matter if you post it in a regular post box rather than going in to a post office - I've never had one returned to me and I've posted a fair few books this way
