Hi Mums, my daughter went to her 1st proper disco this wend, I was in to collect her before it was over so I heard some of the conversations between all the teenagers some of them were saying oh I had 11 meets (kisses) others were saying I had none. I asked my daughter did any fella try to talk to her and got no no mum not at all. But I just knew she was hiding something I checked her ph and to my horror she had 4 meets. She is only 13 is this what they do now adays or how do I deal with this. Ive dropped hints again about what I over heard and said to her oh they have no respect etc I was after having the big chat with her before she went and I would add thats she is fairly clued in in general. She was bullied last yr and i just hope this isnt her thinking if i do this i will be popular. Any advice out there pleasseeeeee

Unfortunately with teenagers now the more meets you have the 'better'.If yuo only have the one its considered very sad by all the other teens!

I have been having this discussion recently with my son and my niece.Trying to tell them that shifting 4/5/6 people in the same night is not cool and it is not respectful but they don't seem to be getting it. :sigh:

oh I know - there was nearly war here after the only disco (even though they're not called that) DS1 went to and he put that on a friend's facebook page......and the look he gave me :bomb: , but he told me he only "met" two girls so that was all right wasn't it. GGGGGRRRRRRRR.

I don't have an answer - we have lots and lots of talk about respecting ourselves and respecting others but honestly I don't think he pays the slighest bit of attention to me, he doesn't think it's a big deal :(

I think we will be busy on the nites these discos are on in the future, some of them anyway, she was told already that she wont be going to them every month. Im only in my 30's I cant remember things been like that when I was a teenager I suppose I met my hubby while I was 14 so wasnt in to the whole 'meet thing' Just keep telling her about respecting herself and others I suppose is all we can do. :tellme:

The only time we ever did that was on New Year's Eve and then it was kissing as many boys as you could but the most I ever kissed in one night was 3 (sounds like loads to me now though) but on other nights you might be asked to dance in the slow sets and he might try ot kiss you.... God be with the days, what they are doing now is really a bit mental. But on the other hand better than what was also going on back then, couples would disappear outside into the football field behind the disco and god only knows what they were at but rumours were flying it.... it was always the "sluts" who went outside back then, the same girls every time.

It is exactly the same at the one here. I dropped and collected dd and her friends on Saturday night and this seems standard. I am faltering between giving a lecture and not hearing it or saying nothing and continuing to hear the goings on.

Good god! I'm dreading all that!
Maybe we need to separate shifting from self-respect tho. Is it possible that the girls are also enjoying it/having fun and it has nothing whatsoever to do with self-respect?

My dd is nearly 14 and she has been to a few discos. One night she left her facebook opened and there was pm asking her to meet boys. I have had a chat about playing hard to get and not making it easy for the boys. One of her friends met 8 times in one night.

It wouldn't really bother me much. "Meets" are French kisses. They don't mean you have to commit to the other person. Both teenagers realise it doesn't mean any more than "I like the look of you for now". I think they kiss as many as possible to practise technique! Well, that's what we did as teenagers :lookround:

Dd nearly 12 told me she didn't kiss any boys while she was @ Gaeltacht cos her & her friend are frigid
I explained to her that not wanting to kiss boys didn't make her or her friend anything except picky & to keep being picky til she finds a boy (just 1 mind u) she wants to kiss

Apparently ds (10) is not frigid he has kissed 4 times in a game of dares but it seems to be the same little girl who is letting all the boys kiss her so I had words with ds about sharing, it's good to share ur sweets but not ur girlfriend !!!

I'm in my early 20's and that kind of thing was around when I was young too. There were a group of "loose" girls in my year in school (so to speak) who used to go on what were called "slut runs" at the discos. Whoever got the most meets would be the winner, and the losers would have to buy her a small bottle of vodka for winning. It was gross! I remember one girl winning after getting 36 meets in one night..Needless to say by the time we were in 4th-5th year no boy would touch her because of her reputation.
