Hello there

DD was 13 days overdue and was born with dry flakey skin ALLLLL over her. I massaged olive oil into her skin each day, this helped remove some of the dry skin and moisturised it. I didnt wash it off till that evening in the bath.

Dd suffers from mild eczema and very dry skin. Silcocks base is brilliant for her. Really inexpensive in big tub from chemist. She uses it as a soap and as moisturiser. I use it myself if my skin gets very dry.

Hi shiv  Thanks for that.

Just me thanks for that too, would it not be a bit harsh for an almost 2 week old? I know i used it on both my other two but they were over a year i think.

I second the recommendation on Silcocks Base.... it worked a treat on DD's skin after she was born!

Diprobase cream is creamier than silcocks base and is fantastic cream. I use that and olive oil, both are fab.

DS2 had really dry skin too and at his 6 week check the paediatrician told me to use silcocks base as a soap in his bath water and really rub it in, and to bathe him every day or every second day. It is still dry but has definitely improved with this.

I used silcocks base as a soap and moisturiser in DD when she was a baby as well.

Just dissolved a big spoon of it in the water as the soap.

We found oilatum cream worked great for DS, a mix of olive oil/sunflower oil is great too. Currently we are loving MooGoo too

DD was the same, the midwife said not to use anything on her as it was her body's way of regulating itself or something like that, anyway, it went away itself and she has perfect skin now. so I would say do nothing!

Oilatum is really good but as your baby is so young, he is just shedding excess, he might be fine in a few days. DD3 has a few little dry patches and the Oilatum is great for that.

Angel my little one's dermatologist recommeded nothing but olive oil. He said everything else is perfumed and not great for newborn skin. He also advised against daily baths as it just strips the natural oils from their skin. Apart from the nappy area, small babies are not dirty and do better with a wipe of a wet cloth for regular cleaning and a couple of baths per week.

I'm shocked that they are still recommending silcocks base. There is detergent in it!
As a soap it's fine but it's just that, a SOAP, a detergent. You wouldn't use soap as a moisturiser on your face, why use it on a newborn?

I used to use it on my legs and it ripped the skin off me. My best friends kids attend crumlin where hey are now warnif against using silcocks base and aqueous cream as moisturisers. Only emulsifier can be left on the skin and even then, it is only a barrier cream.

I used specific stuff for DD, weleda do an amazing calendula oil and/or use an olive oil. Oilatum is great I've heard, as is bepanthen.

It feels nice to so why not?
But if you think about it, it lathers up... Regular creams don't do that.
It's very badly both advertised and explained I think..

Ive only just found this out on here from other MM's.... the pharmacies are all still recommending it though, information its seems to be very badly circulated in the medical world about something so simple.

I heard about aqueus ream alright last year, it affet the 7th layer of the skin and breaks it down.

Ive been using silcocks on ds3 sine he was a month old and he eczema was getting worse. Using emulsifying now since last week and its still bad but seems to be improving a bit with the help of hydrocortisone... He is nearly 9 months and feel awful that I ould have been doing harm to him...

Aveeno helps too.

Baby Massage Ireland recommends cold pressed vegetable oils only (preferably organic) - any petroleum based or mineral oils (johnson's baby oil) just sit on the skin rather than being absorbed...
