Two of my friends put on & couldn't lose a band of weight around tummy/hips/bum while on the Mirena.

I got the Mirena and put on 35 lbs! It was the first time in my life I had a 'middle' I looked like I had a spare tire! Plus my wedding rings didn't fit! I NEVER had to take them off even though all thee of my pregnancies. I finally got it out and literally the weight DROPPED off in a week!! Sure I loved not having a period but I hated feeling so bloated!! It was aweful! The worst part was most of the literature says the iud will not casue weight gain. For ME this was bull!!!

....and I reckon I'm the other AandL friend referred to above. :D

I put on about 10lbs which I just couldn't shift no matter what I did. Mirena out 5 weeks tomorrow and weight finally on a downward path rather than staying the same (and getting to 'staying the same' rather than 'putting weight on' required a lot of effort over the last 6 months). I got it out for other reasons than weight gain, but even the first year on it, when my weight didn't increase much, I was definitely bigger around the middle....

I felt my body was holding onto an extra layer of unnecessary fat with the mirena, that's been my experience.

I am a stone heavier since dd3 and have the mirena also.
A friend of mine has always said that almost everyone she knows with the mirena has a pot belly and for me it's true.

I am running and doing boot camp as well as doing ww at home and finding it impossible to shift that stone.

Similar situation here. Got Mirena in and started on Anti-D's at the same time and put on 2 1/2 stone. I was blaming the anti-d's but I am off them 6 months now and running 5k every second day + Zumba class once a week.
Guess how much weigh I have lost - sweet feck all! :bomb:

Getting the Mirena out on Friday. If it wasn't for the weight gain it would be the perfect contraception method.

Got mirena in Oct '10, and it does what its supposed to. Noticed I was getting a big tummy last summer. Really hate it now, looks like I'm pregnant again at times (as in most of the time). Now I know it doesn't help that I need to stop eating rubbish. There was a time that I was 8 stone 2, ten years ago I'll admit and could eat anything. I'm 9½ stone now and it kills me.

I am 2 years trying to unsuccessfully shift a spare tyre, I have trimmed down everywhere else but around the tummy. Maybe this is why.

Am hoping it will have the reverse affect on me so. Flipping heck another spare tyre is not what I need.

I got mine in Nov 09 and it wasn't until the next summer that I noticed the start of the spare tyre - when I went to put on summer shorts and capris that I hadn't been wearing... and at that point the weight on the scales had only gone up a pound or two but I could definitely feel the difference in my clothes. Very similar pattern to your experience...

Another one here with a pot belly and even if I starve myself, it wont go away. HATE the swollen boobs, bloating and especially the loss of libido. Waiting for results of blood test to see if I've started menopause and if so, out it will come. How much does a GP charge to get it out? Pity you cant whip it out yourself.

Glad to know I'm not alone, The scales hadn't really changed until recently but there is definitely a change in measurements. Could be sending DH for a hospital visit if this keeps up!!

I think it the price of a gp visit.

Ah damn it anyway. Had been planning on getting this in this year but already have a gut and don't want another one. I'm losing weight (slowly and painfully) at the min so don't want anything fecking that up. Why can't there be something invented with no side effects!

I asked my gyn about this and he was adamant that my weight gain wasn't from the mirena, so much so that he gave me a lecture on calories going in/calories going out, I felt like sh1t after. If there was another solution to lighter periods I'd give it a go, I just can't shift this weight no matter what I do.

Tubes tied or get your DH to have the snip. Current discussions going on in our house.

Maybe in a few years! Want to keep my options open, i'm only 27 and even though i think i'm done, dd is still young that might change in a year or two.

On that note though, my friends sister was married and had her 3 girls very close together and decided she was done after no 3 and wanted hers done but they wouldn't do it for her on account of her age. I think she was 24 at the time.

Eh, if you're lucky! My GP tried twice and failed to get it out (after a scan in between visits confirmed it was definitely there), then the gynae couldn't get it out either with both a scan and a nurse in the room... I ended up having to go under GA and get it out privately as a day procedure in hospital.... Needless to say that cost quite a bit more (although in fairness the GP didn't charge me for the failed attempts)... I know, I know, not the typical experience but just to point out that whipping it out isn't always that straightforward either!

I'm lighter and stomach flatter than when I got the mirena in. I can't say I could blame mirena for any weight gain at all.

My obs says the same although she does acknowledge the Mirena doens't suit everyone (I think she meant from a hormonal perspective iykwim).

I got it in last September and it hasn't interfered with my weight loss.

That's great it hasn't affected your weight loss...

However, I don't get how they can claim it doesn't cause the weight gain - did we all just start pigging out and putting weight on in very specific areas in the year or so after getting it in??? I reckon I managed not to put weight on initially both because it was was taking time to establish plus I was exercising very regularly then, but I still felt it on my tummy ... Every side effect or complication won't affect everyone, but there has to be a large % of people who do have weight gain directly attributable to the mirena, in my opinion....
