I've started running again recently, and I'm aiming at running a 5k run on the 11th of March. Now its nothing serious, its for charity etc, but I still don't want to make a show of myself.

What kind of time is respectable to run 5k in?

With most races you can look at last years results to see what times it was run in. I like to do this to make sure that with my time I won't be last!!! :)

Its the 1st of what will be an annual race  otherwise, excellent idea, if I don't die of exhaustion or shame during this one

There are usually always people walking as well so you're bound to finish before them! Honestly, don't worry as there's always a huge mix of abilities at these things. The winners will probably come in around 14 minutes (I know, crazy!!) and everyone comes in after that. My first race took me 36 minutes and I was nowhere near the last person. The 2nd one I did took me 32 minutes and again I was nowhere near the end (well actually I was near enough the end but definitely not the last person!). I can do it in 27 minutes now so I am getting better! Try not to worry and just do your best! (says me who always worries that I'm going to be the very last person and be mortified crossing the line!)

Thanks Hokeypokey, I know I shouldn't worry, but I haven't entered a sports competition in years, (and years, and years), so I'm a bit terrified. I'm kinda aiming at 30 minutes. I did 4km last night in 27 minutes, so hopefully with another few weeks I'll be respectable. From your experience, that sounds like I won't be last.

I have to say I am really enjoying running again, and pushing myself to do a bit better every run, so its all good

And don't forget that the adrenalin (pure terror!) on the day helps you get around quicker than you think!

I did 5K in 32 minutes. It was a lot quicker then I'd normally do. You run so much faster in an actual race.

Thanks Vonnie, I'll keep going so and hope the adrenaline / fear add some speed

I'm running that same race, so don't worry, you won't be last! I'd love to do it in 40.

Really? That's great, I think you live close enough to me, are we nodding at each other as we run past I wonder? There is so many people running the roads around here at the moment, it really helps to keep at it.

You will definitely not be the last with that time. My first was 39 mins  then 35 so nearish to thirty but training for a 10k so am slowing
For me it was just about finishing it but I didn't want to be last and I was nowhere near last thank God!

I'm in too, I've never raced before, I'm hoping for the 40 min mark but I'm not there yet.

That's great - well done!

I'm finding the training ok so far - today it really clicked and felt great and not wrecked after 7.6k so I am delighted as had been finding it tough till this week. My pace is getting better too! How do you find it?

Less than a week to go to my first race and I did 5k last night in 30 minutes!! I was thrilled, although I did think I was going to throw up in the last 500m

Really hope I can do it again on Sunday now.

I'm planning a shorter run with some fast paced sections tonight and another run on Thursday, then rest until Sunday (with some yoga thrown in)

I'm all nervous about Sunday, I know its only fun and for charity, but I'm really nervous.

You have no reason to be nervous, you will fly it. You'll be gone home and I'll still be running (or trying to run) on Sunday.
It's just for fun so relax and enjoy it :-)

Mrs Holly it's completely normal to be nervous at your first race. I remember thinking I was going to puke at the start line of the first 5k race I did. 30 mins is very good and you will have plenty finishing behind you so don't worry about it. Well done! :bigups:

I so miss running. I think I may even glare at runners when they pass me because they are doing what I can't. :lookround:
