DH thinks I should stay as long as possible to get a break from boys but not sure how long I should stay. Insurance pays for 3 nights so won't be too long anyway!

I'm open to being corrected, but I would suspect if you are in one of the maternity hospitals in Dublin and not on your first they won't even have you stay for 3 nights unless you are private.

I think its usually only overnight? have also heard of mums having baby at very early oclock being let home by teatime.

You could always book a hotel and have the kids come visit for a day or two!!!! :bigups:

public in Cork is 3 nights, but you can choose to leave after an uncomplicated birth after 6 hours (this from a midwife) and i guess this is a national recommendation for public? VHI pays the 3 nights anyway as far as i know but i never used it. They do prefer first timers to stay 3 nights. I stayed 2 nights on first and one on second, hated the din TBH.

I was public with ds1, and back then, the north was 5 nights, 10 for a section!
I was domino with ds4, had him at 7.30 am and was sitting down by my own fire by 7.30 pm. It would have been earlier only OH wanted to give kids dinner before collecting me!

DS1 almost 19 years ago I was kept in for a full week, no complications apart from fainting in the shower a few hours after he was born.
DS2 was private in Oz, stayed in for 4 nights.
DS3 Domino Scheme in Holles Street, had him at 12:30pm, and was home in time for Eastenders the same day.

DS1 - 3 nights. Public in Waterford. This long due to manual delivery of placenta and establishing BF.
DS2 - 19hrs...This was Domino Scheme in Waterford. I would've been quicker but no Pead doc to sign him out until next morning.

Going on the domino scheme again on this baby...due in June. I wanted to be home quickly as Ds1 was born 4th Sept and Ds2 was due 2nd so I didn't want to miss Ds1 birthday or arrive home with a new baby on his birthday...not that it mattered as Ds1 thought his new baby brother was theeee best gift ever. I think I'd actually love a night or 2 stay on this baby (obviously complication free) but only because ds1 and 2 are in school and playschool. Saying that I really have the whole summer to take things easy!!!!

DD1 stayed for 3 nights this was in kilkenny 9 years ago.
DS and DD2 1 night each in holles street 2008 and 2011.

Wanted to stay a second night on DD2 as my afterpains were horrendous but was told as they were very busy and she was my 3rd baby with no complications I had to go home as they needed the bed. There was a women opposite me after having her 2nd section and they wanted her to go home after 3 nights but she was having none of it and told them she was entitled to stay for 5 nights. The ward sister was'nt impressed and told her the mid wives would call to see her at home but there was no moving her.

DD1 - C section so five nights - Rotunda
DD2 - VBAC, 1 night before I had her and 4 nights after I had her, she spent 1 night in SCBU having her tummy washed out because it was full of mucous.
DD3 - Had her at 3.30am and they asked if I wanted to go home that day at 7am, told them I'd like to stay in at least one night as was breastfeeding and wanted to get that kind of established before leaving back to a house with two toddlers.

January, I meant to ask you before, did your DD1 know you were having a baby when you were having DD3? Or was a new baby sister a surprise to her (like it was to us on MM  )

Was in a private hospital for the first two, so it was 4 nights for the first, and then 3 nights for the second.
Was private in a public hospital on babies 3 and 4, had them in late the evening, and was out within 12 hours both times.
(Though on baby 3, they were happy for me to leave an hour after delivery only that DH stopped it as it was a cold night :lookround: )

DD3 was a surprise to everyone. She's nicknamed Cilla.
