I was at a talk at DS's school last night - explaining what our children would learn in Relationship and Sexuality Education. I'm still in a bit of shock. Firstly, all the talk of 'waiting till you're married' has disappeared and it's just sex within a 'long-term, loving and committed relationship'. No 'in your face' preaching about the morality of sex. But the bit that shocked me - well if you saw the woman who gives this talk - she looks like a nun - in fact she's a granny - was the definitions of all different types of sex. I just didn't expect the teaching to have moved on so much that they'd get detailed explanations. The explained vaginal sex (kind of expected), then anal sex (really? you, the nun-like woman are going to give a definition of anal sex to a group of 30 15-year-olds?) and oral sex. (oh dear). Then she told us there are 4 types of oral sex (I was going 'are there?' and trying to count) - mouth to mouth (apparently it counts and you can get syphilis and gonorrhea from kissing, which I didn't know, blow jobs - and the nun person gave a full description of what a blow job is, lick-outs, and yes, she used that term along with another full description and finally - RIMMING! Call me old-fashioned but I never thought I'd have a granny define rimming to me. Never mind a granny who looks like a nun. Thankfully she left out golden showers, snowballing and fisting but she alluded to the fact that she knows all about all of them and if the kids ask her any questions about them she'll be well equipped to answer. It was a real eye-opener!

Wow. I'm sure it isn't that detailed in every school? I'd say most of them know it already. I mean we had to look up dirty words in a dictionary, kids nowadays have googlethe lucky feckers! I remember being so curious about what an orgasm was from the problem pages. When it came to our sex ex class we were supposed to be able to write our question down and they were all given to the teacher to explain. Our old wagon got out of it by saying we were all grown up and could share everything with each other. This resulted in a really boring biology class with questions about periods and eggs. Witch!
