DD3 has shocked us this past few days by announcing "pee" & running down to the potty & using it. She is 19 months & really has had no signs of tt'ing. She has been slow enough in all her areas of development & is only saying a few words. I still have her nappy on but when I take it off she will sit & pee no problem. TT'ing was absolutley not on our agenda.
This may sound like a boast dressed up as a problem but I genuinely would like to know if it is common.

DD1 was trained a while before her sisters were born and she was 22 months when they were born so she probably started about the age your LO is now. It was all her own doing as the last thing I felt like doing when heavily pregnant with twins was toilet training a toddler.

Great so it is not my imagination! Can you remember did she take any longer than normal to become fully trained during the day?

Honestly, I can't remember. The only reason I know she trained at that age was because I definitely didn't have 3 in nappies.

Well in dds case it wasnt that early but it was earlier than I expected! She was 2yr and 2 mths when she decided she'd had enough of the nappies  .

DD1 is 19mths too and in the last week has been going to the potty and sitting on it when (I think) she is doing a wee in her nappy. Like your lo she hasn't much words though. She does know when she wets a fresh nappy and she knows when she is doing no.2 and will tell you in her own way she needs changing (not that you need to be told that!) I was thinking of having a go at training next week but was doubting it would work given her lack of words? Like I don't think she would be able to tell me she needs to pee if you know what I mean!

She sounds like dd then. Well dd doesn't make any indication that she needs to go at all. She just sits & pees! Your lo definitely sounds ready. DD2 was the same at 18 months. She clearly knew what was going on & I trained her early. She did have great speech though so that probably helped.
Even though your dd can't say much she woudl understand if you say pee to her so I would say it would work. We will have to compare notes on how this goes!

 came on here to see about dd2 and see you have written my post for me! Don't know if I am happier to see you are at the same stage (same age too 19 months) or that your dd has few words too! I always said I would potty train 2 and 3 as soon as they showed signs as I didn't with dd1 (dd2 was a month old and I was just too busy and stressed) and am still regretting it. I did train dd1 at 2 and had no issues with wees whatsoever but we are only making headway with poos on the toilet now at nearly 3.5! She started to have issues with the sensation of pooing before I started training and I should have nIpped it in the bud immediately. Lesson learnt but now I am stuck as dd2 has very few words. Did her wee on potty no trouble at all this evening and can make herself understood but I thought they needed better language to train. Maybe not? Can't wait to hear how you get on! I am a cloth nappy user and have three using nappies (dd1 at night although was dry last night  ) so happy to see a reduction in users!!

Hi Lisa I have been in full on toilet training mode all week & it is going well I think. I originally posted this at the end of August & I had intented to try at the start of september but I didn't in the end up. With all the rain & 1 metre of clothes in the utility I couldn't face it! She is in cloth too. DD's speech has expolded all of a sudden since though-you lo will probably do the same.
We haven't left the house since tuesday & she has been doing really well. She will go to the potty, poo & pee no problem. I can't see her ever telling me she needs to go though iykwim? I'm going to stick at it this time though. I believe they are better off being trained earlier as they get more defiant later. I know alot of people don't agree though.
Good luck-I think your lo sounds the same as dd & tbh I could have done this earlier even before her speech explosion as the talking hasnt actually added anything! She does it all herself without talking.

Oh that is brilliant news both on the TT and the speech. I would agree with you on the go early approach if they are ready. Hope all continues to go well this week. Miserable out there today so no rush to get out there

In india they train really early before baby can walk!!!! they make certain sounds that baby then associates with going to the toilet so its more going on prompt rather than training iykwim  My DD1 was 14 mths when she was trained, she suffered badly from constipation so as soon as she could sit i always sat her on a potty after meals (after applying lots of baby oil TMI) but she just got used to it and trained herself dry day and night at 14mths. DD2 was aboout 2 yrs old which is still early  so yes it can be done

Think I am going to have to bite the bullet and start with dd2 despite the lack of words as she was starting to stress today doing her poo (in a nappy) even though is was really soft so it wasn't difficult or anything. Wonder has she picked this up from dd1 and all her poo stress. Never really thought of that. :bomb: could really do without another 1.5 years of poo issues only for dd3 to copy in time too then!

God girls, I feel really bad after reading this thread. DS2 (22 months) has been trying to take his nappy off for a couple of months now and has successfully used the potty several times. However, his language is very poor and I've been holding off trainig him, mostly for this reason, but partly also because I just can't face it as I think it will take much longer as he's so young. Maybe I'm wrong though and I should just go for it? I don't want to be holding him back if he's ready!

I would go for it when you are both ready she ra. It's a joint effort!

Just bumping this up, how are you doing a few months on?

My 21 month old decided yesterday she wants to use the potty and has done her wees and poos in it since, no accidents.

It's really not possible for me to stay indoors with her for days so will put a nappy on her when we go out, I wonder if it will be very confusing for her?

I do thininfusing bit confusing but when you have no other choice what can you do. She will still get there. Dd is doing great now. The novelty wore off for a while recently and she had loads of accidents but we are back on track again.

I bought a potty thing the other day for ds who is 21 months. He has sat down on it, mainly because I brought him and it to the toilet when I was going myself to kinda show him toilet association but aside from that he just loved the feeling of sneaking off the thing and having a bare arse! I really dont think he is ready. The only other thing he has done with it is be cheeky by trying to climb into it and looking at me the whole time waiting for me to tell him 'no'. He is the type of child that would sit in a dirty nappy all day quite happily though so I don't know why I even bothered!!

Dd2 (now 22 months) is fully trained and could not have been easier. She took herself off to the potty and that signalled the start. Just removed nappies and never looked back. She is also dry at night now. DD1 (3.5) is just dry at night too so went from three in nappies to just one! I didn't know it could be this easy but it really has been. Not a single accident out and only two in the house since we started. She has been such a handful of a child but boy has she made up for it.

I would say that if they are ready go for it. Might not have been when I would have chosen but so glad we went with her.

Great, thanks for the replies!

I put a nappy on her today for school runs and shopping and she did wee in it but whipped it off as soon as we got home and used the potty. Only 1 accident today.
