do you have to have a big garden/allotment to take part?
can people who don't have much experience at growing veggies go (I've only ever managed to grow courgettes/spuds)?

nbgb, I'm not involved in Lucan GIY (I'm in the West) but my DH is heavily involved with the organisation. He's the green-fingered person in our house as I tend to kill anything that grows from 10 feet away. Even I would be welcome at a GIY meeting. It's for everyone from those thinking about starting with a couple of pots on their patio to people with fully fledged veg gardens/allotments/polytunnels. If you want me to ask him any questions, please feel free to post here or pm me.

Everyone has something to bring to a GIY group and everyone can benefit! HTH :)

I thought it was very good actually! Nice to chat about growing things with other like minded souls.

The meeting started with two presentations - one on how to test your soil ph and why it might be important, and one on chitting potatoes and growing potatoes in general. Comments from the group included tips on composting, growing potatoes in pots and a few other things. Then we broke into groups of 5 or 6 and shared experiences.

There were 25 - 30 people there, ranging in age from mid thirties to 70s I'd say, and a great mix of people who'd not started growing anything and only had balcony space, to mad people like me who have 3 allotments, with lots of people having grown in their gardens for years but only just started growing veg, and others with lots of veg but not much flowers - basically, anyone with any sort of interest, even if it's just growing cress on cotton wool on your window sill.

Thougt it was great. Next Lucan meeting is on March 21st, same time, same place.

That's great cbro. Glad you enjoyed it. Sounds like it was a perfect GIY evening. I have to say that, eventhough I'm not involved with it at all (it's completely DH's baby), I think it's a great organisation. DH is making some great new friends through it too. I just hope we don't end up with everyone else getting his help to have a fab garden and us having a crappy one

Ah no cant believe im only seeing this now, would have love to have gone. Will defo be there next month. Great to have somewhere to go for questions and learn things. Cant afford an allotment :( but grew loads in the garden quite successfully last year so planning on giving the garden an overhaul and get some more raised beds in this weekend. Im amazed my kale and cabbages survived our winter need to take them up though and move beds to other side of garden.

Liriel, if you're thinking of doing raised beds, I'd highly reccomend using old scaffolding planks for them. They're robust, are a great size, cheap and cheerful and have a funky industrial look about them. You'd get them from a hardware store or a builder.

Don't know what sort of groups you mean but this group meets once a month so it would be somewhere to start.

phinky just to let you know where we have the allotment near newcastle is only 150 e, and the south dub coco ones in corkagh pk where the waiting list is are 100e now - the newcastle ones are on aylmer rd, which is close to where pollyhops was so the lucan side. they're new since last year and the owners are lovely and have space available. here's a link to their ad: http://www.allotments.ie/?p=1761 if you go for it tell them Cliona sent you!
