How does a school dictate what present you should give if the party is outside school hours??

Sorry should hv said that's the parents association..

My ds is just starting JI this sept and I think it's a great idea.. It takes pressure off a lot of parents financially, trying to decide what to get and all the unwanted gifts..

I just had ds 5th party and we had 30 kids.. Personally I would like the party without any gifts.. I just want the occasion marked with some fun..

We happen to live in the country, big extended family and neighbours with kids same age.. Last year I had similar nbrs and was mortified with envelopes with €20..

I know parties only are for a few years but remember there is families everywhere who hv no elec, not enough food even in your area/class..

That's what I usually give but this young fella is a friend of mines young one so I've bought him some avenger lego... It says 5-12 in fingers crossed my boys will help him build it anyways :-D think avengers will be a big hit as he's been super hero crazy for ever and I don't think he'll have the lego already so thank you.

You can do that. I know people who have had 'no gift' parties, Oxfam Pass the Present parties or in one case the child nominated a charity (it was animal related) and asked for a donation rather than a present.

I think that's a brilliant idea.
Far better than having to try to think of something that the child may not like, or may have already, or may have gotten 3 of same thing at that party!
At least the child can then be brought to spend it on something decent from schoolmates!

I remember last year DS got 3 of the same thing (people having same brilliant idea! :D ) and I was terrified bringing them back to smyths to swap in case I ran into one of the other mums! We have a batch of parties within about 6-7 weeks, the same crew are all friends and get invited to all the parties so I couldn't even pass it on!

So either tenner or no presents would be my ideal ( although the latter would prob upset kids too much..... Might be something we could try in a few years maybe)

We got a note home at the beginning of Senior Infants (last year) from the Parents Association asking that €5 be given for parties. This would be great if people did it but for DS birthday he got 2 €5's. The rest were €10's and presents.
