After 3 missed mc i am delighted to be expecting twins next summer. I have two kids already and went private in the coombe on them but i am thinking of going to the twin clinic this time . Can anyone tell me what its like - how often do you have appointments etc. Is it public or semi private? Will the consultant deliver - i will be section?

grateful for any infomation.

Congrats :)

I was Semi P in the Coombe twin clinic 5 years ago so it might be different now. I had my 12 week apt & scan as normal, discovered it was twins & was not back until 20 weeks. Then it was every 3 weeks or so to the hopspital. After 30 weeks or so it was either the GP, Semi P clinic or twin clinic weekly. Some weeks I was up there twice. I was always scanned & weights were estimated. My DDS were ID so they were monitored closely. You can go public, My SIL was public there & was only 4 months behind me. I don't think there was a huge difference except for some of the appointments she ended up in the Public clinic downstairs whihc is bedlam.

As for delivery, my SIL had midwives only for most of it. It was her 4th PG & her boys were fraternal, she was also 39 weeks. Mine were prem, identical & I had a room full of people. It was a very different experience & I am not sure it was down to being Semi P, I imagine it was because I was high risk. DDS ended up in SCBU so there were paeds, gynaes, obs, midwives, students. It was manic.

An obs delivered, DD1 was by forceps. I think the rate of sections in Ireland for twin births is around 50%.

Any other questions, ask. I had DD3 there too a year ago exactly & I found the hospital to be great both times. I had complications both deliveries too.

Congratulations! I have twin dd's who are nearly 3.5, so many questions buzz around your head with a multiple pregnancy. I was going semi-private, once the twins were detected on an early scan i was assigned to the twin clinic (it's the same clinic regardless of public or semi private). I found the care very good, i met the same consultant most weeks accept days he was attending a birth. He was on holiday when my csection took place bit that didn't bother me.

The twin clinic wait time was never too long (had dd1 semi p and waits were often quite long). I participated in a twin study during my pregnancy so i had lots of addition scans to measure twin growth patterns, very interesting.

They aim for vaginal delivery and my consultant considered 38 weeks as term for twins, i needed a planned csection in the end (at 38 weeks) due to the position of the babies (transverse and breech). I was in a semi-p ward which was nice and quiet, interestingly I didn't get charged the semi-p booking fee, presumably as i was attending the twin clinic, my health insurance covered the other costs.

Ask any questions as they come to you, it's an exciting time, twins are fab :D and i'm sure especially precious after yoir losses.

thanks girls

I will deffo be having a section with these as i had emergency sections with my last two kids and they said after two any others will be section. Twins are non identical. I am with the EPU at the moment due to my history and doc said she would book me into twin clinic when i go see her in two weeks again. On my last pregnancy that i mc on i had decided to go semi and was told you pay 750 euro then for 3 scans - i paid for the booking scan found no heartbeat and never got futher. Previous to that i had been private and just can't afford it this time even though i would love to go back to same guy. so i wonder what is the difference between semi and public. I have a fear of a junior doing my section. I have had 4 D&cs in coombe in the last year (because of mcs) and one was done by a junior and i had all kinds of complications and needed a second so would like to know a consultant will deliver.

I am sure lots more questions to come - like how will i cope with 4 under 4 but at the moment just happy all is going well with them

I had 3 under 4 & am here to tell the tale. My SIL (that had the twins too) had 4 under 4 plus an older girl and did so well, the boys were 4 & 2 when the twin boys were born.

Not sure on the rest, only went SP in the Coombe.

DS was born last year in the Coombe - I had two private scans in the IMFF run by Prof Daly and AFAIK he was and is still is the consultant in charge of the twin and diabetes clinic in the Coombe. He is really lovely - there were questions with DS and he was so reassuring. Unfortunately he had nothing to do with the 'normal' public clinics. After DS was born, I ended up in an anti natal ward and one of the girls was expecting twins and was so happy having him as the consultant. She was a public patient.

I remember being told at the time I had my twins that for insurance purposes they must have a consultant Ob in the room when twins are delivered. i don't know if that is true or not. My consultant was at my twin delivery though a student midwide delivered them. I had no intervention though so the cast of thousands were mostly just watching until afterwards.
