Hi LMum,

Just wondering are Drs Firth and Kinsley in the Coombe?? I had a baby last November and was attending these doctors in the Rotunda. Just wondering if they "float" around the various maternity hospitals!! :stupid:

Suzanne, AFAIK Dr Firth is solely in Holles Street, and Dr Kingsley is in the Mater. I know there is another Dr in the coombe, but can't remember their name :sleepy:

That used to share the Diabetic clinics, but have taken on one each to simplify things.

Sounds like your BS reading are pretty good Holly. If you can just try to train yourself to choose hi-fiber, long acting carbs, and watch your portion size, then you might be able to stave off the diabetes for a little longer :bigups: I know Anthony Worrell Thompson did a cookery book about pre-diabetic states (he has syndrome X, which is similar to you) so that might be worth a look.

LMum, you shouldn't need to snack (IMO) on insulatard. Try to talk to the dietitian (Shinad) when you next go in. But don't forget, these early weeks leave you all over the place until the hormones settle at 8 weeks.

Hi, Last time I was in HS on DS1 the clinic was shared with Firth & Kinsley. I've only been once and met Firth. I'm hoping Kinsley is still in HS as well......?
I had a slice of b bread last night E, Sinead told me I did need a snack at night on Insultard...?
I rang the hospital today since the sugars were so high (15 in morn) and he's double my dose from I6 to I12 at night (no eve Insulard still), so we know what that means!! What is wrong with a more gradual approach, I'd nearly put money on it that I'll be low tonight... this seems like a bit too much. I reckon I10 would have been enough......anyway who am I to argue?

Hi Lmum, I know when I was pregnant I used to have to set clock for2.30 or 3.00 to check my blood and have small snack cos if I didnt id get funny during night. I know its a nuaisance but my poor DH was going through hell with me getting hypos in middle of night . It worked for us.
Be narky all you want , all those hormones racing round you have all the moments you want    TBH id be the same if I knew he was telling me to do something I knew wouldnt work.

Hi,

Am totally confused now! On the Rotunda website both Drs Kinsley and Firth are down as department consultants!! I last saw a doctor there in January and that was Dr Byrne. Maybe Drs Kinsley and Firth are just there part time or have re-located!! :sleepy:

I was told to have a bedtime snack too by Sinead when I was on Insulatard, that stopped me going low during the night and ending up really high in the morning too :P

Stupid me still could'nt / can't figure out though why is it that a low during the night ends up being a really high at night - Dr told me it was to do with the liver releasing sugars during the night to compensate the low :stupid:

Anyways, I'm outta the office in a few mins, wish me luck tonight girls as I'm all on my own with the kids until DH gets home tonight. He's down in Cork for the day at an interview....... and no doubt I'l be like a bear with a sore arse when he comes in the door as I'll be dealing with a cranky two year who does'nt know whether he is coming or going :bomb: Bless him though I do love him dearly - its just those awful terrible twos :bomb: :bomb:

LMum - have a low GI meal this evening for tea, and your slice of brown bread before beddies, set your clock for 3am and see what your sugars are like, you might be able to see a trend over the coming nites with the 3am readings and gauge from there. Good luck hun :bigups:

Suzanne just spotted your post there, Dr Firth and Dr Kingsley are both Diabetic consultants who alternate in each maternity hospital. When I was having my two they used to be in the Coombe on Thurs mornings, but I think that has now changed to Tues? Not 100% sure, but they're not Obs at all, just diabetic consultants who work in conjunction with the Obs. So they probably spent a morning in Holles st on Fridays, coombe on Tues and Rotunda another morning/afternoon. Hope this helps :bigups:

Thanks Dutchie, I had thought that that may be the case!! The diabetic clinic was always Tuesday mornings in the Rotunda. I used to see my Obs first and then go to diabetic clinic afterwards. I hadn't "regular" diabetes, had gestational diabetes but doctor had warned that I would more than likely develop GD again in subsequent pregnancy (not pg at the moment!!). Just a query you might be able to answer - how early on in second pregnancy would you have to go to see diabetic consultant if you had GD on first pregnancy?? I know for first pregnancy it was diagnosed nearer to 30th week or so (as far as I can remember!). Thanks! :)

Hi Suzanne
Once they have the GD on your medical files, they will start monitoring you sooner in the pregnancy. Not too sure how earlier, but blood tests will determine that for them to start sending you to the Diabetes clinic. Your best bet when you become pregnant again is to watch your diet closer, that may well keep away the diabetes clinic visits for longer imo anyway.....

LMum how did you get on this morning? I was thinking about your post re the dose being doubled and was thinking to myself that it was a bit much :nervous:

Hope everyone else is well :bigups:

Hi guys, day off yesterday so only posting today.
From your posts, looks like Firth/Kinsley have full reign of all the Dublin hospitals during pg, so there is no alternative.
Well, to give you an update, the 1st night my BS was 8.6 going to bed, so I felt happier doubling the dose as at least it would bring down the sugar. Surprisingly, it was ok next morn at around 6. Took the double dose again last night- night BS 7.5 but went really low at 2am-1.8- woke up in a sweat. Had set the alarm, but not until 3am....so am now confused as to which result works. I guess I'll just have to set alarm again tonight a little earlier and see! The pg hormones I guess make each day different.
Feel really tired but other than that nothing yet- am worried that I shouldhave more symptoms, even though it's still only just over 5 wks.

Hi girls, hope your all well. How are the blood sugars going Lmum?
To answer your question on dm and 2 children I realise now why doctors recommend diabetics not have more than 2 children.  . I dont know about the rest of ye but as mothers I think we all look after the kids needs first. I used to find myself getting low as I fed the kids. After youngest was born I realised for my own sake and theirs I had to do more blood tests so I wouldnt be going low.

Morning all,
Could'nt find this post until DM updated!! :D

I found 2nd pregnancy harder in terms of having to find the energy to run around after my DS who was 17th mths old when DD arrived!!! Plus for some reason, I had horrible hypos when pregnancy on #2. As for managing the diabetes with the two of them, its hard.. but I try to make sure that I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner on time. Can be a struggle when trying to feed them, and feed yourself too :nervous: But when DH is around he is fantastic.....

We're thinking of giong again too..... DH always wanted 3, I was sure I was finished after having DD, but now that she is more mobile and has a great routine going,,,, I'm thinking 3 would be nice... Told Dr Firth this at my last visit and he said - fire way girlie!! So age being a factor with me (35) I won't leave it too long before I grab DH by the scruff and run him up them stairs

LMum, it'll take a few more nights to get your sugars to settle down, but defo set the clock for 1.30am, and make sure that you eat your brown bread at super to avoid going low... but if you find yourself running low over a few more nights, then I'd cut back about 2 units and see...... the joys of pregnancy and diabetes huh

Anyone around the dublin area here?????? I'm organising a meet up in the Playzone in Celbridge for a coffee on Friday morning 17th if anyone is around?

Hi girls,
good to hear how you cope-even if it is difficult at times. Dutchie- can't be too bad if you are going again & I'm glad to hear the doc says its no problem at 35. ...hmm may consider a 3rd myself, but we can think about that again later.......
My bs aren't too bad- I rang in on the wrong day (doc told me wrong day) to give my results, so between myself and nurse we sorted the adjustments and they're not too bad- still having lows of course. Dutchie I took 2 iu less at night- worked 1 night but last night I went low, so I don't know? Have to try again tonight. Due in on Fri for checkup. Have a rotten headache now - probably from going low this morn- 1.8 at 9:30am & during the night!

hey everyone,
LMum, sorry to hear you are still going low at night  thoses hypos headaches are the worse (because you know nothing will make it better) so :console: and hope its gone by now.

God, Dutchie (and dm too :D ) you are great to consider going again.. ..I think our generations' reservations are because we are older starting (not sure about you in particular DM) so we don't have as much energy to cope. I have just found out a friend of mine is due to have her third. She has a dd my own dd's age, a baby girl (born in may) and due in march, so she will have 3 under 3 :yikes: . She is delighted, as is her dh, as I think they really want a boy, and their two girls are very good, so... I think I would be terrified :blushing:

Anyway, still have my secret to reveal (patience Dutchie:biggrin: ), and going off down West this weekend (dh could not take hols over the bank holiday, so we are doing it this weekend instead) so might see you in Cleggan DM

Hope you have a nice weekend E. Im in westport so Ill hardly see you  Really curious about your big news. :D I definitely not having more. My own gp advised me to have tubes tied after last pregnancy as pregnancy was unplanned and we were delighted to have 4 kids. When I told him I didnt want more children he wrote letter to my ob/gyn and they tied tubes at same time as doing c section.I had my first ddat 21 and last ds at almost 30.I worry about my sister whos also diabetic , shes 32 now, she and dp havent decided yet when to start trying for baby. I know she wants to try now but dp is not ready yet. Im just wondering did any of you have any problems trying to concieve?
this may sound like a stupid question but you see all my pregnancies were happy surprises
Lmum hope that headache is gone now. its rotten isnt it?
Dutchie laughing here at the image of you dragging dh up the stairs   Enjoy the trying
We live in a bungalow as dh wont move into two storey house with me, as I fell down the stairs (HYPO) when I was 9 weeks pregnant with dd2. He got an awful fright so when we were buying we bought bungalow. He wouldnt even look at two storey

I will wave in your direction from the bens DM

It took us a year to concieve dd, and I was 32 when she was born. Also I was taking glucophage at the time (I'm very insulin resistant) and I found out afterwards that its perscribed for those having difficulty TTC. So glad I didn't know that at the time iykwim...

So scary to have a hypo like that - for your dh more-so  . I had a bad hypo years ago, and woke up in hospital. I had bitten my tounge, and my nighty was covered in blood, but apart from that (and a terrible headache) I was fine.
My sister, who heard me thrashing around in my sleep on her way to bed and looked to see was I ok, took much longer to recover :blushing:

Hi girls hope you don't mind me joining in. I was diagnosed as type 1 diabetic in June 2005. I had my beautiful DD in June this year. Thought I would never come to the end of all those diabetic clinics and lovely blood samples :nervous: but it was all worth it in the end. Just wondering did many of you have normal deliveries. One of the doctors I seen kept telling me I would end up having a c. section, was so glad I proved her wrong. :D

Hi sunflower and welcome. I had my first dd 'normal' delivery. I have to say I had a prat of a dr for that pregnancy and it was an awful delivery with absolutely no explanations or understanding on drs part. enough on that subject see previous posts on my opinion on him. All the rest of my children were delivered my c- section. TBH I found the section alot easier and less stressful .I was awake for ds1 and dd2 but I had to have full anaesthetic on ds2 so was asleep. Are you in dublin?

Hi, welcome sunflower. I had a "normal" delivery, in that I delivered after a really long traumatic labour following induction, I had a ventouse delivery to help in the end cos ds shoulders were getting stuck. It was borderline untl the end as to whether it would be section or not. Got an infection after and nipple thrush when b'feeding. Did anyone else b'feed by the way- how did you find it?
Sunflower you asked how long it took to conceive as well- 1mth on DS1 (age 28), 4 mths on no.2, age 30. Not bad, did my homework though so knew my fertility signs quite well (the TTC board on MM is great for tips!) Also got BS HBA1c under 7 while TTC. I was expecting it to take longer on no. 2, thought no 1 was just a fluke- I had allowed up to a year to conceive

have to keep the posts short in case they get "lost" on this laptop! Anyway, am feeling sick today- not sure if it's ms or because of my swinging sugars- was 1.8 am then up to 15 after lunch and has been 10 since, hmm..... just when I'm due a checkup on fri and probably a roasting! it was proably a yo yo effect from going low. I got stuck in a meeting which went over my break, but I wasn't sure if I was low if you know what I mean, otherwise I would have got up and left to get something.
Dutchie, I'd like to meet up with the kiddies but I work on a fri (unless going to the clinic)
