Just found out my car is a write off. I have no money to trade it in against something in a garage and the mechanic has told me to sell it for scrap. How can I do this? ANyone have any idea?

what kind of write-off? is it an economic write-off or is it a write-off meaning it is not allowed be driven anymore?

I its the latter surely your mechanic can put you in touch with a scrap merchant? If not I'm sure you'll find one in the golden pages, make sure you get more than one quote tho!

write off as in no amount of money will fix it. i am heartbroken. I got a loan at the start of the year to fix the car up and it passed the nct recently too. totally screwed at the moment.

My friend did this a few months ago, they pay by weight, you get very little, his was a Golf and I think he got 40euro but I suppose otherwise he'd have to pay for it to be taken away, he had to drive it there, somewhere in Kildare i think, broke down twice on the way!

I take it you mean its not driveable then?

Depending on the car you may get some ok money for the parts? Did you get money from your insurer?

I cant believe that either.

Sorry I'm confused. Normally a car is a write-off for insurance purposes. Did you have an accident or something? what happened that it ended up in the mechanics?

If something is wrong with the car he is probably telling you its beyond economic repair which means the cost of repairs would be more than the car is worth.

Can you take it to another garage and get a second opinion?

We brought ours to the end-of-life place on the longmile road and got €100. How did it pass the nct if it would not be worth repairing??

When you need to rise to the occasion, do it with style. Do it with a knowing smile. Confound them. Astound yourself. Make it look easy and it will become so.

Can happen very easily. Can pass NCT then the next day a big part goes and it's not worth replacing.

No idea, I am shocked myself. Incidentally I drive a Liana

My brother reckons I should keep the car in storage (dads!) till i can trade it as scrapage. still dont know what i can do for the forseeable though. he has an old peugeot I could tax and borrow I think. have fired off a mail to the credit union on the offchance i can get a top up. my job is fairly solid and i earn a decent wage but I have 2 loans already with them so not too hopeful. stupid flipping cars.
