As a soap it's fine but it's just that, a SOAP, a detergent. You wouldn't use soap as a moisturiser on your face, why use it on a newborn?

I used to use it on my legs and it ripped the skin off me. My best friends kids attend crumlin where hey are now warnif against using silcocks base and aqueous cream as moisturisers. Only emulsifier can be left on the skin and even then, it is only a barrier cream.

I used specific stuff for DD, weleda do an amazing calendula oil and/or use an olive oil. Oilatum is great I've heard, as is bepanthen.

Absolutely agree with this, there is another mm on here ( barbie ) and her dd received burns from using silcocks/aqueous creams :(
Olive oil is brilliant

I just used olive oil and gave him a little massage, dry skin cleared up really quickly.
Got my hands finally on a bottle of burts bees apricot oil and I use that now after the bath, but mostly cos I just love the time with him doing a wee massage.

Silcocks base and aqueous cream are two different things. Silocks is recommended as a moisturiser. Says so on the pack and asked in pharmacy too and they said people get the two mixed up. Aqueous cream is vicious on skin apparently.

I remember being recommended silcocks base/emulsifying ointment/aqueous cream for DS. I spent a rediculous amount of time studying the labels, and from what I can remember they are all similar emulsifying preparations with varying amounts of paraffins and sodium laurel sulphate. Silcocks base being the thickest, aqueous cream the thinnest. SLS is a detergent and is thought to be responsible for skin thinning. I never use them as a moisuriser but found this where it is suggested as a cleanser http://beaut.ie/blog/2011/silcocks-base ... ng-secret/
