I started this in July but packed up after 6 weeks due to other circumstances. I want to start again alongside WW so count me in. New year - new me? I reckon if I tell enough people I will have to go through with it, Thats what worked for me in 2009 and I lost 4 stone and did a couple of 10ks walking, but 2010 was a crap year and I went backwards.
That race sounds great but going from very overweight with zero exercise to 5k on Patricks day might be a bit much. What does anyone think?

I tested where I'm at on the treadmill yesterday and managed to complete week 6 day 1.
I'm going to carry on with week 6 and I'll be checking in here to cheer you all on, offer tips and give out and stuff. :stern:

I'm very tempted to sign up for that race now so I've no excuse for backing out! I had entered a fun run for the end of November but it got cancelled due to the snow.

Gulp. I cannot believe it. Someone seems to have hacked into my MM. I wonder what other ridiculous stuff they've posted under my name.

Taurus, aren't you in Mayo too? Will we all try for it. I bags last place anyway. But I'll be there. :Jumpy:

Ok so while you are inspiring every time I read your running posts A&L I doubt I could do it. I would like to get fit and be running everywhere and looking lean and energetic but I am a crap runner. I could swim far further than I could run if that makes any sense. I would have a red red going purple face and my knees would be creaking and I'd look clumsy and wrong running.....does everyone start like that or am I just a no hoper??!! I reckon people would be looking out their car windows laughing their heads off at the sight of me

Due Feb - I was thinking a bit like you but Feck It, I want to be healthy for myself, my husband and my kids so If I have to go through a phase of looking like an eejit for a while so be it.

Did the 1st day today after never having ran in my life. Looked like I should be in coronary care when I got home but feel that it went better than I thought. Definitely it was tough and I was glad to be finished but I will go out again on Sunday and it will get easier as I get fitter.

I think I was just focused on getting through the session and getting home in one piece to be too bothered about people looking at me and luckily I didn't meet anyone on the road today.... I know I am not a pretty picture with my purple face and all the wobbly bits but everyone has to start somewhere

eilismc- well done on Day 1 and you're attitude is commendable.
If some lazy bugger sitting in their car (imagine they are driving 5 mins down the road to get a McDonalds) want to scoff at me well yaboo shucks to them!
When I started out I ran in a local park rather on the roads as there were less onlookers. Of course except for the times I was running around a football match in progress! but I chose to think of them as my team of cheerleaders :bigups:

I like it, thanks! I'll have a wee think about the logistics and hopefully will talk myself into it!

due feb - don't give 2 hoots what anyone in thier car who sees you running thinks, your getting yourself fit and healthy and they may be too lazy to run and prehaps envious of you actually getting yourself out and going running.

definately starting day 1 tomorrow and i hope to stick with it.

good luck everyone!

Well done Eilis!! The first day is very hard, so fair play to you for getting out there and doing it.

What I found made a huge difference in my confidence was having the right gear to wear. Aldi and Lidl do it every so often and Penney's have some. I got capri running leggings and matching tops and a light jacket. Proper socks also.
The more often you do it the easier it gets and the more your confidence grows.

That said, I'm doing it on the treadmill at the moment as I find it hard to get out without a child clinging onto each leg these days.

Chipsticks the podcasts are the programmes that you download onto your phone or mp3 player. They have music and a guy telling you when to walk and when to run! I think AandL gave the links to them earlier in this thread.
Go on, you can do it, you know you can!

Thanks Everyone, I am delighted to have gotten out there. Don't feel as wrecked as I expected that I would.

Hit the shops this morning and got a new pair of runners in Elverys - they were really discounted so I was delighted with myself.

Got a pair of the Capri leggings and a light Reebok TShirt in TKMaxx- Only problem is that they didn't have any with long sleeves, all Tees and Vests - Was looking on www.mandmdirect.ie and there looks to be a good selection of long sleeves there OR would seasoned runners recommend short sleeves with a light jacket??

I have my DS2 signed up for a playschool on Tuesday & Thursdays from 17th Jan so intending to get out those 2 morning when he is gone and DS1 is at school.

I really want to stick with this as I just want to be a bit fitter and healthier. Must check if there are any runs near me that I can sign on for to give me a goal to work towards.

Where in Lucan are you, I am in the Finnstown area but very close to the park, I am very unfit myself and don't even know where to start

Oh they have lots of lovely new stuff on mandm, I shouldn't have looked! Personally I prefer a long sleeved top over a jacket, if I get warm I just shove the sleeves up, but a lot of the girls on the runners thread prefer to do layers - the running jackets are so light they wouldn't bother you when you take them off & tie them around your waist.
If you do an order from mandm the full length tights would be good for the colder weather too. They feel lovely and supportive too.

Happy New Year to ye all & good luck to all heading out for their inaugural run over the weekend.

Good on ya girls.

I started the Couch to 5k in August 2009 (with AndL - well, virtually, though she was a few weeks ahead of me) and I haven't looked back. The right gear definitely helps. You feel more confident if you look the part.

A t-shirt under a light jacket or long sleeved top is fine during this weather. The capris are great. Get good tight ones and they'll hold you in! I have Nike ones that are really like a second skin.

Sweatshop.co.uk is good for gear I've found. Fast delivery.

I also bought shorts from this place, they have great deals on twin packs of long sleeved tops:

http://stores.ebay.ie/Time-To-Run-UK/Ws ... 34.c0.m322

Best of luck to you all. Looking forward to hearing about your 'graduation' and first race in a few months! :onfire: :onfire:
