Yes, one capful of witch hazel neat onto the pads when putting on fresh ones - soothing!!

And a few drops of tea tree oil into a sports cap bottle of warm (NOT HOT) water to use to spray as you wee initially, especially if you tore/have stitches. Relief, and helps keep it clean (tea tree has antiseptic properties).

Girls, about Solpadeine. Please ask the pharmacist if you can take it when pregnant or breastfeeding. It has a codeine in it and it totally banned in Australia. So I would double check before taking it. Though its a very good pain killer.

Yes, you can take it when you're breastfeeding if you need serious pain relief (or Nurofen Plus) - not every day for weeks, obviously, but it's what I was recommended to take after my section if I still needed pain relief after I came off the prescription stuff. Given that I had intravenous morphine for the section, I suspect baby's exposure to opiates from the Solpadeine was fairly minimal in comparison.

(also I presume in Australia that codeine is prescription-only, not banned entirely!)

If you are in pain and panadol not helping then the docs will prescribe something stronger. No need to bring your own drugs in

Yes, in fairness when I was in the hospital myself I actually had to ask them to stop giving me powerful opiates (morphine et al were making me a bit queasy, other drugs were much better), so I hardly needed my own supply. Though I've heard horror stories of people being left waiting without pain control. And the OTC drugs were hospital-recommended and very useful when I was out again.
