It's a mature horse chestnut tree but I need to plant a line of something roadside, but it would be under the shade of the tree.

What would stand the best chance of survival, I'd like something with colour and one which keeps its leaves.

Thank you

Is your Horse Chestnut not dying, ours is and one in the neighbouring field is dying as well.

We have copper beech under ours, mind you it is growing better on the ditch where the tree does not cover but it is growing none the less. Like the suggestions above.

Do you want to go native or non-native?

Amber, I think it's ok :bigups:

Native would be nice and in keeping with where we are.

I'd imagine if you wanted to go native you could go with hawthorn or blackthorn, spindle (lime soils). I know you don't want a woodland but this link gives some good info on Irish woodland species including understorey http://www.ipcc.ie/infowoodlandsfs.html.
