Hi,
I wonder could anybody advise me on a few options for hedging in a south facing small front garden. It will be planted inside a low wall and I would love a mix of hedging that would be hardy enough for our now cold winters. I am a complete novice so it would be good to know a bit before I head to a garden centre. Ideally I would like something quick enough growing, so is there something out that there is nice to look at, hardy, quick growing that I could plant? Also, is this a good time of the year to be planting hedging?
Thanks in advance for any help with this.

I would recommend laurel. You can get it in three or four different varieties so it looks like different plants but they go together very well.

Sorry don't know about the planting - I think we put ours down in the spring. Any garden centre will advise you.

Do not do leylandii no matter what.

You can get bare root Laurel now this time of year and plant it now. Its much cheaper too - Prunus Lusitanica is Portugese Laurel.
Prunus laurocerasus Rotundifolia is the common or Cherry Laurel.

Another Laurel fan here..have it in our front and it lasted thru the cold winter no bother. It always looks vibrant and healthy and grows pretty fast!
